Role Purpose
The NDE Examiner (Level 2) is a senior inspection professional responsible for performing, leading, and signing off on non-destructive examinations for pressure vessels, piping systems, and custom processing equipment fabricated at 5Blue Process Equipment Inc. This role operates with a high degree of independence, applying advanced knowledge of welding & fabrication, NDE methods, and ABSA regulatory requirements to ensure that all fabricated equipment meets the applicable standards before it leaves the shop or is commissioned at a client site.
The Level 2 examiner is also a technical resource and mentor to Level 1 Inspectors and junior QC personnel. This role carries significant individual accountability for the quality integrity of 5Blue’s fabrication output.
Key Accountabilities
Advanced Inspection & Code Compliance
- Perform and independently sign off on all NDE examinations in accordance with ASME Section V, Sec. I, Sec. VIII Div. 1 & 2, B31.1, B31.3, and other applicable codes and project specifications.
- Provide disposition for any out-of-tolerance conditions.
- Review fabrication packages prior to start of fabrication, ensuring all NDE requirements can and are met. Ensure documentation, traceability, and examination records are complete.
NDE Program Oversight & Witnessing
- Develop and maintain the NDE scope for assigned projects in accordance with code requirements, project specifications, and the approved ITP, including NDE method selection, extent of examination, and acceptance criteria.
- Review and approve NDE procedures prior to examination, verifying technique, equipment calibration, and personnel qualifications are compliant with applicable standards.
- Perform and evaluate NDE examinations (PT, MT), reviewing reports (RT, UT) and providing disposition of indications in accordance with applicable code acceptance criteria.
- Scheduling NDE with production to minimize schedule impact while meeting all code-required examination requirements.
- Maintain the NDE status register for assigned projects, ensuring 100% completion of required examinations prior to pressure test and final release.
Third-Party Inspector Interface
- Serve as 5Blue’s representative during client and ABSA inspector visits, coordinating fabrication records, witness point activities, and documentation packages.
- Prepare and present fabrication packages to ABSA inspectors and third-party inspectors for mandatory hold points, ensuring documentation is complete and deficiency-free.
- Manage the resolution of ABSA inspector comments and non-compliances, coordinating with the QC Manager and engineering team on required corrective actions.
- Maintain the ABSA inspection schedule for assigned projects, ensuring all mandatory hold points are communicated and confirmed in advance.
Non-Conformance & Corrective Action
- Identify, initiate, and manage non-conformance reports (NCRs) for fabrication defects, code deviations, and material non-conformances on assigned projects.
- Evaluate NCR findings to determine appropriate disposition – use as is, rework, repair, or reject – in consultation with the QC Manager and engineering team.
- Monitor corrective action completion, verifying that rework and repairs are performed in accordance with approved procedures and re-inspected to the required standard.
- Analyze NCR trends on assigned projects and communicate recurring issues to the QC Manager for root cause investigation and systemic corrective action.
Mentorship & Team Support
- Provide on-the-job mentorship and technical guidance to Level 1 Examiners & Inspectors.
- Review and countersign Level 1 Inspector reports and inspection records as required by the project quality plan.
- Assist the QC Manager with developing inspection checklists, ITP updates, and quality procedure improvements.
- Support the training and orientation of new QC team members on 5Blue’s inspection practices, code requirements, and documentation standards.
Qualifications & Requirements
Required
- NDE Level 2 certification in a minimum of two methods (PT & MT) through a recognized certification body (CGSB).
- Experience in a pressure vessel fabrication, piping, or industrial manufacturing environment.
- Deep working knowledge of ASME Section V, VIII Div. 1, B31.3, Section I, CSA W59, and ABSA quality program requirements.
- Demonstrated experience interfacing with ABSA authorized inspectors and CWB.
- Ability to independently review, interpret, and apply fabrication codes to examination scenarios.
- Valid Alberta driver’s license.
Preferred
- CWB Level 1 or 2 Visual Weld Inspector certification.
- NDE Level 2 certification in UT or RT is a strong asset.
- Experience with ABSA NDE demonstration process.
- Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) designation through the American Welding Society (AWS) is an asset.
- Experience with custom processing equipment, separators, dehydration units, or oilfield skid packages.
- Familiarity with heat treatment procedures, post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) documentation, and hardness testing requirements.
- Familiarity with MTRs and ensuring MTRs adhere to code requirements.
- Valid H2S Alive, Standard First Aid, and WHMIS certifications.
Working Conditions
This role involves regular work in the fabrication shop in Edmonton, Alberta, with periodic field assignments to client sites and processing facilities throughout Alberta for field inspection, commissioning support, and ABSA witness activities. Full PPE required at all times in the shop and on site. Occasional extended hours may be required during critical inspection hold points, ABSA visits, or project close-out periods.
Compensation
Competitive compensation commensurate with certifications and experience. Details to be discussed during the selection process.
Pay: $80,000.00-$85,000.00 per year
