Canada West Veterinary Specialists (CWVS), a privately owned and operated, multi-disciplinary emergency and specialty hospital is looking for an exceptional Veterinary Assistant to join our newly established Cardiology department. Our goal is to build a service that delivers high-level, progressive cardiology care.
The first veterinary specialty hospital in Metro Vancouver, CWVS is a state-of-the-art Level VECCS level 1 and VetCOT Trauma centre certified facility. We have 30+ veterinarians in the following disciplines: emergency and critical care, surgery, neurology, radiology, internal medicine, oncology, and cardiology. In addition to a rehabilitation department, 6 ORs, 2 isolation wards, and a newly redesigned ER, ICU, and Wards, we are equipped with 2 digital radiology suites, a CT, and a 1.5T MRI.
The Cardiology Patient Care Assistant will work closely with the Cardiologist and Cardiology Veterinary Technologist to support the efficient operation of the cardiology service. This role will involve direct patient care, procedural support, client communication, and assistance with the day-to-day logistical and administrative needs of the department.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assisting with the safe handling, positioning, and restraint of patients for echocardiograms, electrocardiograms (ECGs), Holter monitor placement, and other cardiology diagnostic procedures.
- Supporting the veterinary technician during technician consultations and assisting with patient care and diagnostic procedures as required.
- Assisting with the preparation, organization, and setup of equipment and supplies required for interventional cardiology procedures.
- Providing non-sterile procedural support within the operating room or interventional suite while the veterinarian and veterinary technician are scrubbed into the procedure. Under the direction and supervision of the veterinarian, this may include assisting with the operation and monitoring of equipment such as fluoroscopy systems, invasive hemodynamic monitoring equipment, and other procedural technologies.
- Communicating with pet owners and accurately relaying information, instructions, and updates provided by the veterinarian or veterinary techologist, while directing medical questions or concerns to the appropriate member of the cardiology team.
- Assisting with departmental administrative and logistical responsibilities, including sending prescriptions to pharmacies, uploading and processing Holter monitor data, organizing diagnostic information, and supporting the management of cardiology records and documentation.
- Assisting with scheduling and coordinating cardiology appointments, diagnostic procedures, rechecks, and interventional procedures to support an efficient departmental workflow.
- Working collaboratively with the cardiology veterinarian, veterinary technologist, and other hospital departments to ensure a high standard of patient care and efficient operation of the cardiology service.
- Maintaining, organizing, and restocking cardiology equipment, procedural supplies, and clinical areas as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- The ideal candidate will be highly organized, comfortable working in a fast-paced clinical environment, and have a genuine interest in developing their knowledge and skills within veterinary cardiology.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Graduate of an accredited program for Veterinary Assistants or equivalent experience preferred.
- Previous cardiology or interventional experience is not required, and comprehensive training will be provided for all aspects of the role.
- Customer service experience is an asset.
WORKING HOURS
- 4, 10-hour shifts between Monday - Friday.
- As a member of the overall CWVS team, you may be required to assist in other areas of the hospital when your service is not in need of you or if the doctor on the service is away. This could involve working any shift within the twenty-four-hour operating day of the hospital, including weekends and holidays.
