ABOUT THE PORT OF NANAIMO
The Nanaimo Port Authority (Port) administers, controls, and manages the harbour, waters, and foreshore adjacent to Nanaimo, British Columbia. The Port provides for the safe and sustainable movement of people and goods while delivering economic growth to Vancouver Island, the Province of British Columbia and Canada. The Port maintains port resources, stimulates projects and initiatives in cooperation with community partners and businesses to create new jobs and increase economic development and opportunities while focusing on safety, security and sustainability.
POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Lead Hand Maintenance (LHM), the General Maintenance/Labourer is a hands-on position, that is responsible for completing quality upkeep, repairs and maintenance of the Port’s assets, facilities, and properties.
The work performed within the department covers all areas of Port properties administration, including but not limited to cleaning of grounds (including garbage removal), groundwork, landscaping, mechanical, carpentry, plumbing, painting, roofing, building renovations and upgrades, concrete work, minor electrical work, and other work as required.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Accountability 1: Activities
· Completes quality preventive maintenance tasks and repair of assets considering environmental requirements, takes utility meters readings as planned and directed, as well as corresponding report templates.
· Maintains the vehicle fleet in good and safe operating condition.
· Maintains Port facilities and working areas in a clean and organized manner as per the principles of 5S programs (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain).
· Ensures that power and hand tools are used in accordance with established safe working practices and are maintained to a safe, reliable working standard.
· Works with LHM and Property Supervisor for ensuring that needed materials and supplies are in place prior to task commencement.
· Works with the LHM and Property Supervisor for ensuring the properties are being maintained safe, secure and in good condition.
· Works with external trades as they service Port facilities as needed and directed.
· Adheres, complies with, and enforces Port safety policies and procedures whether they are statutory or specific to the Port or tasks. Wears appropriate PPEs.
· Develops and maintains good and respectful working relationships with peers, Port’s employees, contractors, consultants, suppliers, and NPA’s tenants.
· Responds to emergencies after working hours and weekends.
· Performs any other duties as directed by the LHM and Property Supervisor.
Accountability 2: Department Administration
- Ensures daily tasks are recorded, reflecting the work completed or involved with.
- Works with plans, diagrams, blueprints, drawings, and specifications as needed.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Working both in and outdoors in all weather conditions. Regular working hours are between 7:00am to 3:00pm or as per operational needs and includes Saturdays and Sundays. May be required to work outside normal working hours. Physical efforts needed include climbing ladders, lifting and carrying up to 50lbs, or pulling heavier objects, etc. Some exposure to dirt, oil, and noise.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE
- High School Diploma
- A minimum 2 years related work experience or relevant combined experience in a variety of trades work
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License.
- Basic working knowledge of regulations and safety requirements.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS
- Good organizational, planning and time management skills.
- Good spoken and written communication skills.
- Able to communicate clearly and courteously with contractors, suppliers, and tenants.
- Basic working knowledge of computers.
- Able to work on multiple tasks concurrently and to effectively handle moving priorities.
- Able to work with custom software, including input of information on both a desktop and cell phone.
- Enthusiastic, self-motivated and has positive attitude.
- Works well individually as well as in a team environment.
