- Develops RF and telecommunications design by developing project concepts and objectives including demand criteria, coverage, and number of channels; preparing a project plan, including required resources, development timetables, cost estimates, and link budgets
- Designs and constructs RF and telecommunications systems by researching, analyzing, sectioning, and applying design techniques and criteria
- Enhances engineering and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments
- Prepares maps, schematics and system documentation; configures systems; characterizes the path loss; calibrates the signal propagation model; develops a network simulation including traffic and loading analysis
- Prepare Site Acceptance Test, Factory Acceptance Test, ITP, Construction Work Packages and other documents as needed
- Selects and recommends equipment
- Evaluates current technical processes and procedures, and develops processes based on requirements
- Prepares request for proposals and quotes
- Evaluates current design procedures, and helps develop standard procedures for design
- Proposes alternate plans and recommends the best alternative
- Ensures the requirements of Tridon and Customer communications systems meet the design specifications
- Work closely with service, sales and customers for sales support, troubleshooting, etc.
- Assist in the development and continuous improvement of a Tridon quality system
- Perform Site Surveys
- Other duties as required
General Manager of Tridon Engineering
The Design Technologist reports directly to the General Manager of Tridon Engineering. The incumbent also works directly with:
- Project Manager(s)/Project Coordinator(s)
- Service Department
- Sales Department
- Inventory Department
- Third Party Contractors
- Clients
The Design Technologist will work mainly in an office environment; however, occasional travel to customer sites may be required. Exposure to outdoor weather conditions may be a possibility.. The incumbent must wear safety glasses and safety boots, as well as a hard hat and safety vest during site visits.
- High School Diploma
- Diploma or Certificate in Electronics Engineering Technology/Technician or suitable combination of education and experience
- Registered with ASET or eligible for ASET registration
EXPERIENCE
- Valid Construction and Safety Training System (CSTS) certificate including generic WHMIS
- Valid AB Class 5 Operator’s License or equivalent
- Recent Driver’s Abstract will be required upon condition of employment
- Networking experience that includes network design, operational support, hands on implementation and configuration of various network infrastructures would be an asset
- Extensive knowledge of two-way radio theory and communications systems. Knowledge of battery backup systems, base stations, repeaters, multicouplers, duplexers, cellular and SMR BDAs
- Experience in specialized radio programming software will be an asset.
- Knowledge of, and experience in, structured cable and fiber optic design

The Design Technologist will work in an office environment and travel to client sites and must be able to spend 98% of the day sitting, and 2% standing. The incumbent will also be required to look at a computer screen for long periods of time. There is a possibility of eye and/or joint strain related to operating computer equipment.
