We are not like all those other jobs you have been looking at. Sure, we are professional social workers, but we have fun doing it. It is complicated, but read all the way through to see if you might fit into our team. Respectfully, if you do not have a N or better license and a car, please do not apply.
The Kamloops Brain Injury Association is looking for a life skills worker to join their dedicated team of community minded workers. The successful applicant will hold a degree or certificate relevant to human services or social work and have experience in the field, or have other relevant qualifications and experience. Hours are from 8.30am to 4pm; however the successful applicant must be willing to undertake occasional duties outside of these times. Some of the work is in the office, but most of the work is in the community. Candidates must be able to empower clients to be successful in all aspects of their lives.
The job involves working with survivors of brain injury. You will need to work with clients to determine goals and set up realistic plans to reach those goals. You will need to be able to navigate the sea of different agencies and refer survivors to the most suitable agencies, while still empowering them to handle as much as they can. A major part of the job is working individually with clients, in our community, taking care of critical life issues, like doctor’s visits, shopping trips and government office appointments. The life skills worker will also lead group sessions in various topics.
You need to manage time very well and work independently, so you need a strong sense of self direction. At the same time, you must be a team player and be able to communicate well to the larger team. You must be able to give clear, professional reports, verbally and in writing, to our partners at Interior Health, other care professionals, and family. Maintaining a professional demeanor, modelling healthy behavior to clients and maintaining high standards of confidentiality is required.
We are a small team at KBIA and a major benefit is working with decent people who care, but who understand that life is complicated and messy. A sense of humour and a well-developed degree of patience are critical, but good will is even more important. We work with all the people of Kamloops, on their good days and on their bad days, so you need to be comfortable interacting with all sorts of people.
We are a non-profit, so expect more glory than money. Successful applicants must have their own reliable car or truck to transport clients. Mileage is reimbursed and you must have a clean driver’s license Class 5 N or above and you must keep your vehicle legally able to drive on the highways, as we do some work outside of Kamloops. You would need to maintain an appropriate level of insurance for carrying clients associated with work. OFA Level One First Aid is required and employment would be contingent on the results of a criminal record check.
Many people want to work part time because they have other things going on in their life. We understand that and want to work with the right person to make things work for both sides. At the same time, we must serve our clients, so we need you to respect our flexibility and hold up your end. With the right candidate, we would set up a schedule and we would require commitment to the plan. Retired and bored, wanting to do some meaningful work? Part time university student wanting a job that gives experience? You sound interesting to us, don't be shy!
Experience with Acquired Brain Injury is an advantage and should be highlighted in your cover letter. Submit your cover letter, explaining why you are suitable, and CV to the Indeed website to be considered.
Deadline. Don't wait for the deadline, we are reviewing applications and scheduling interviews as we get applications. Include a cover letter with your resume. I need to know if you can write and if you read all the instructions. You would be surprised how many folks don't!
