Summary of Position
Abalone Construction is a privately owned company with over 40 years specializing in Industrial and Commercial civil construction. We offer construction services in a variety of markets including Infrastructure, Roadbuilding, and Land Development.
Reporting to the president, the HSE Advisor is a vital member of the abalone team. They are directly responsible for providing support and coaching to management, staff, and field workers to meet legislated and corporate HSE Policy and Rules and promoting our core safety values. They are the subject matter expert with the company’s HSMS.
Role and Responsibilities
Utilize knowledge of Abalone’s Health and Safety Management System to advise, mentor and assist management and craft workers with the implementation of programs to satisfy Abalone’s and the client’s safety standards
Conduct reviews of project execution plans to identify risks and develop appropriate mitigation plans including PJHA’s, JHA’s and project specific safety plans.
Oversee WCB program (e.g., reporting and claims management, modified work program etc.)
Assist, develop and occasionally conduct daily morning meetings, as well as weekly meetings and presentations
Conduct regular site visits and inspections of construction sites
Liaise with client safety representative and project management
Provide support for incident investigations, including identifying investigation requirements and leading of high-risk investigations
Provide monitoring, auditing and support to ensure compliance with Safety Management Plans and to identify opportunities for improvement of safety performance
Support Emergency Response activities for the projects/facilities
Conduct environmental impact inspections and ensure all other expectations of site safety are met
In-depth understanding of subcontractor selection and management
Manage the training matrix
Assist Project Management with safety pre-qualifications
Maintain and update KPI Program
Maintain ACSA audit standards and coordinate COR
Manage safety systems such as Avetta, ComplyWorks & ISNetworld, etc.
Stay current with applicable changing provincial & federal legislation
Qualifications, Training and Education
5+ years’ experience in a safety position with a Civil Construction focus.
Holds NCSO certification
OHS Certificate (preferred)
Safety certifications are assets
Experience with WCB reporting and injury management
Has a strong organizational, coaching, and interpersonal skill set
A demonstrated desire for personal growth
Self-motivated team player with a strong commitment to improving and promoting the Health and Safety culture
Valid driver’s license with a clean 5-year driver abstract
Working Conditions
This position could be office or project based and involve frequent visits to the field for inspections and audits. This position will require occasional physically demanding work in different positions (kneeling, standing, lifting, etc.), as well as long periods of sitting/typing while performing office & computer related tasks.
