We are looking to add a senior construction leader to our team who can strengthen project delivery, support and develop our Project Managers, improve operational discipline, and help HKC continue to grow with the right systems, standards, and accountability in place.
Position Summary
HKC Construction is seeking an experienced General Manager of Construction to lead the day-to-day delivery of our construction projects and oversee the performance of our project-management team.
This is a senior construction leadership role for someone who understands construction from both the office and the field. The successful candidate will be responsible for driving project performance across budget, schedule, quality, client communication, subcontractor coordination, risk management, safety, documentation, and closeout.
As General Manager of Construction, you will lead HKC’s Project Managers, Project Coordinators, Site Supervisors, and project delivery teams while also taking direct responsibility for HKC’s largest, most complex, or highest-risk projects. You will set the standard for how projects are planned, managed, communicated, documented, executed, and completed.
The General Manager of Construction will report directly to the Vice President of Construction and will work closely with Operations, Estimating & Procurement, Finance, Project Management, and Site Teams.
Key Responsibilities Construction Delivery Leadership
- Lead the delivery of construction projects from pre-construction through closeout.
- Oversee Project Managers, Project Coordinators, Site Supervisors, and project teams.
- Set clear expectations for project execution, communication, reporting, documentation, safety, and accountability.
- Ensure projects are delivered on schedule, within budget, within scope, and to HKC’s quality standards.
- Personally oversee HKC’s larger, more complex, or higher-risk projects.
- Support project teams in resolving site issues, trade conflicts, consultant coordination items, schedule impacts, and client concerns.
- Ensure project teams are making decisions that protect HKC commercially while maintaining strong client relationships.
- Act as an escalation point when projects require senior construction leadership.
Project Financial Management
- Review and monitor project budgets, forecasts, cost-to-complete reports, change orders, purchase orders, subcontractor commitments, and billing status.
- Identify early warning signs related to cost overruns, margin erosion, delays, scope gaps, underperforming trades, or weak documentation.
- Hold Project Managers accountable for project financial performance and accurate reporting.
- Support the review, negotiation, and approval process for change orders with clients, consultants, and subcontractors.
- Work with Finance and Project Managers to ensure billing, collections, holdbacks, extras, and closeout documentation are being managed properly.
- Help improve project profitability through stronger planning, cost control, procurement coordination, and risk management.
- Ensure project teams understand the financial position of their projects and are actively managing risk.
Schedule and Execution Control
- Review project schedules and ensure they are realistic, properly updated, and actively managed.
- Monitor schedule risks, critical path items, long-lead procurement, trade sequencing, approvals, inspections, and client-driven delays.
- Ensure Project Managers and Site Supervisors are aligned on weekly priorities, site constraints, manpower needs, procurement requirements, and project milestones.
- Drive recovery plans when projects fall behind schedule.
- Promote disciplined site coordination and proactive communication between office and field teams.
- Ensure project teams are planning ahead rather than reacting late.
Team Leadership and Development
- Lead, mentor, and support HKC’s Project Managers, Project Coordinators, and Site Supervisors.
- Create accountability across the project delivery team while providing the guidance needed for people to improve.
- Support hiring, onboarding, training, and performance management for project delivery roles.
- Help develop stronger internal systems, templates, project controls, reporting standards, and delivery processes.
- Build a culture of ownership, professionalism, documentation, communication, and problem-solving.
- Raise the standard of what strong project management looks like at HKC.
- Support team development so HKC can scale with stronger internal leadership and less dependency on executive escalation.
Client, Consultant, and Subcontractor Relationships
- Act as a senior point of contact for key clients, consultants, subcontractors, and project stakeholders.
- Attend key project meetings, client meetings, site walks, and escalation discussions where senior leadership is required.
- Manage difficult conversations professionally and protect long-term relationships while maintaining HKC’s position.
- Support client confidence through clear communication, strong follow-through, and practical construction leadership.
- Help create opportunities for repeat work through strong project delivery and relationship management.
- Ensure communication with clients and consultants is clear, timely, professional, and properly documented.
Estimating, Procurement, and Pre-Construction Support
- Work closely with Estimating & Procurement before project award to review scope, budgets, schedules, assumptions, trade coverage, exclusions, and risk items.
- Provide constructability input during budgeting, tendering, and pre-construction.
- Review major subcontractor scopes and assist with trade leveling where required.
- Identify potential gaps in scope, logistics, drawings, site conditions, schedule, or procurement strategy before construction begins.
- Ensure a clean handoff from estimating to project management so project teams understand the budget, assumptions, exclusions, and risk profile.
- Support procurement planning for long-lead items, critical trades, and project-specific risks.
Operational Improvement
- Work with the Vice President of Construction to improve HKC’s delivery systems, reporting structure, and operational standards.
- Help standardize how projects are started, managed, reviewed, and closed out.
- Support weekly project reviews, margin reviews, schedule reviews, and project risk meetings.
- Recommend improvements to project controls, subcontractor management, procurement planning, documentation, and internal communication.
- Help HKC scale without losing control of project quality, cost, schedule, safety, or client service.
- Identify recurring issues across projects and help implement practical solutions.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of Local progressive construction experience, including senior project management or construction leadership experience.
- Experience managing commercial, industrial, institutional, retail, or specialty construction projects.
- Proven ability to lead Project Managers, Coordinators, Site Supervisors, subcontractors, and project teams.
- Strong understanding of construction management, general contracting, scheduling, procurement, budgeting, change management, contracts, and project controls.
- Experience managing complex projects from pre-construction through closeout.
- Strong client-facing communication skills and the ability to manage difficult conversations professionally.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, contracts, schedules, budgets, and trade scopes.
- Experience managing project financials, forecasting, change orders, risk items, and cost-to-complete reporting.
- Experience with CCDC contracts, construction management agreements, and fixed-price project delivery is considered an asset.
- Post-secondary education in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, Project Management, or a related field is considered an asset.
- PMP, Gold Seal, or other construction-related certifications are considered an asset.
