About the Role
As a key member of our Estimating team, you will play a critical role in building accurate, competitive estimates and helping North Star win high-profile civil construction projects across Alberta. You will work on a wide range of challenging projects including underground utilities, earthworks, road construction, and site development.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed cost estimates and submit competitive tenders for Civil Construction projects (underground utilities, earthworks, roads, and site development)
- Develop and manage complete tender packages
- Solicit and analyze pricing from vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors
- Review project documents, drawings, and specifications with project and field teams to determine labor, equipment, and material requirements
- Develop project schedules and construction methodologies
- Manage estimate revisions and change orders throughout the bidding process
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, consultants, and subcontractors
- Ensure all estimates comply with safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements
- Participate in post-bid reviews and handover to project teams
- Facilitate pre-construction efforts once project has been awarded
Qualifications and Experience
- 3+ years of progressive experience in construction estimating with a strong focus on Civil Construction
- Thorough knowledge of underground utilities and/or Surface Works and/or Earthworks
- Solid understanding of construction methods, specifications, and procedures
- Ability to read and interpret civil drawings, schematics, and technical specifications
- Experience with various contract types (Unit Price, Fixed Price, Cost Plus)
- Knowledge of City of Calgary specifications, safety regulations, and environmental requirements
- Advanced computer skills, including Microsoft Excel; experience with B2W estimating software is a strong asset
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong analytical, negotiation, and problem-solving abilities
- "Can-do” attitude with the ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
Education
- University Degree or Technology Diploma in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (preferred)
- A combination of relevant education and practical experience will be considered
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with clean abstract
- Various safety certifications (CSTS, Ground Disturbance, etc.) are considered an asset
