Blue HDD Utilities & Excavating Inc. is seeking an experienced Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Locator to join our team. This is a unionized position governed by the applicable Collective Agreement.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe, accurate, and efficient locating, tracking, and guidance of horizontal directional drilling operations. Working closely with the Directional Driller and project team, the HDD Locator ensures bore paths are accurately maintained, utility clearances are respected, and installations are completed safely and in accordance with project specifications. This role requires regular travel, occasional overnight stays, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, field-based environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain HDD locating and guidance equipment.
- Accurately track and guide drill heads throughout the bore path.
- Maintain continuous communication with the Directional Driller to ensure safe and accurate installations.
- Read and interpret utility locates, project drawings, site plans, and bore profiles.
- Monitor bore path alignment, depth, pitch, and clearances from existing underground infrastructure.
- Identify and communicate potential conflicts with existing utilities, structures, and obstructions.
- Assist with bore planning, job site setup, and project execution.
- Perform daily inspections, calibration, and functionality checks of locating equipment.
- Maintain accurate records of bore data and project documentation.
- Ensure all work is completed in accordance with project specifications, owner requirements, and applicable regulations.
- Support the crew with general site activities as required.
- Participate in daily tailboard meetings, hazard assessments, and safety inspections.
- Ensure compliance with all site-specific rules, regulations, permits, and safety requirements.
- Work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining communication with supervisors and project teams.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Minimum 3 years of Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) locating experience.
- Demonstrated proficiency operating HDD locating and guidance systems.
- Experience working safely around existing underground utilities.
- Ability to read and interpret utility locates, engineering drawings, construction plans, and bore profiles.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.
- Knowledge of utility construction methods and underground infrastructure.
- Valid Class G Driver's Licence with a clean driver's abstract.
- Clean driving record with no serious Highway Traffic Act offences within the past three years.
- Ability to work safely in demanding field conditions and adapt to changing job site requirements.
- Strong commitment to workplace health and safety.
- Willingness to complete all company, client, union, and legislatively required training.
Preferred Certifications (Assets)
- Electrical Awareness Training Certification.
- Standard First Aid & CPR Certification.
- Book 7 Traffic Control Certification.
- Ground Disturbance Certification.
- Confined Space Awareness Training.
- Experience with DigiTrak, Subsite, or similar HDD guidance systems.
- Additional utility construction, locating, or safety-related certifications.
Working Conditions
- Full-time position.
- Outdoor work in all weather conditions.
- Frequent travel to various job sites throughout Ontario and surrounding areas as required.
- Overnight travel and hotel accommodations may be required depending on project location and operational needs.
- Overtime, weekend work, and extended work hours may be required based on project schedules.
- Physically demanding work involving lifting, walking, climbing, and working around heavy equipment.
