ABOUT OSCP
One Silicon Chip Photonics (OSCP, legal entity OSCPS Motion Sensing Inc.) builds photonic inertial measurement units and navigation systems in Montreal for navigation where GNSS is unavailable, degraded or denied. Our customers are in defense, aerospace, space and maritime. We are Montreal-based, venture-backed, and ITAR-free under Canadian jurisdiction.
THE ROLE
This role is sometimes called a GNC or navigation/estimation engineer: the discipline is INS mechanization, GNSS/INS Kalman filtering, alignment and calibration.
We build exceptional gyroscopes. We are now building the navigation solution on top of them, and we want someone who has done it before to lead that work.
You will own inertial navigation and sensor fusion end to end: the estimation architecture, the algorithms, the calibration, the validation and the roadmap. You will set the technical direction for fusion and INS development and grow a small team around it, working directly with the CEO and the gyro design team.
This is a hands-on lead role, not a management role. You will write the filter, not just review it. If you want to take a class of gyro most people never get to work with and build a real navigation product around it, this is that job.
WHAT YOU WILL OWN
Navigation architecture: the INS mechanization and the GNSS/INS estimation architecture, and the reasoning behind every design choice in it.
Fusion algorithms: loose, tight and ultra-tight coupling as products require, plus aiding from odometry, magnetometer, barometer, depth and other sensors.
Alignment and initialization: coarse and fine alignment, in-motion alignment, and gyrocompassing that exploits how little our gyros drift.
Sensor error modelling and calibration: IMU error models, factory and in-field calibration, temperature compensation, and the test regime that proves them out.
Performance and validation: define how we measure navigation performance, run truth-referenced test campaigns, and own the numbers we publish.
Roadmap and team: set the fusion and INS roadmap with product leadership, then grow and lead the navigation software team behind it.
Customer depth: support integration at demanding customers and hold your own in the room with their navigation engineers.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Substantial hands-on experience building GNSS/INS or inertial navigation systems that actually shipped, flew, drove or dived.
Deep working knowledge of inertial navigation: strapdown mechanization, coordinate frames, error propagation, alignment.
Estimation in practice, not just theory: Kalman filtering on real data, tuning, observability, fault detection, and knowing why the filter diverged at minute 40.
GNSS fluency, including RTK or PPP, and a realistic view of how GNSS degrades in the environments our customers operate in.
Production-quality C or C++ on embedded targets, plus Python or MATLAB for analysis.
Comfort with the unglamorous half of the job: logging, replay, regression, bench and field test.
Sleeves-up in a startup: we are small, and everyone helps with whatever the team needs.
Eligible to work in Canada and to be cleared for controlled-goods and export-controlled work.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Fiber-optic, ring-laser or another high-performance gyro class in your background, rather than MEMS only.
Defense, aerospace, space or subsea navigation experience.
GNSS-denied navigation: visual or wheel odometry, map-aided, or long dead-reckoning missions.
Experience leading or growing a small technical team.
Graduate research in navigation, and a track record in the ION community.
Bilingual, French and English.
