Overview
HKS Law is seeking a dedicated, organized, and proactive Law Clerk with Real Estate and Front desk experience to join our legal team. The successful candidate will assist the firm across a full range of real estate and small business matters, including residential and commercial transactions, foreclosure, refinancing, private financing, and related corporate work.
You will work directly under the supervision of our lawyer, ensuring client matters are handled professionally, efficiently, and in compliance with all firm procedures and Law Society standards.
Responsibilities
- Manage residential and commercial real estate transactions from initial file opening to final closing.
- Prepare and finalize documents for power of sale, foreclosure, refinancing transactions (for both lenders and borrowers), and private financing deals, as applicable.
- Assist in small business purchase and sale transactions and severance applications.
- Draft and manage mortgage commitments, agreements of purchase and sale (residential & commercial), leases, and franchise agreements.
- Conduct title searches using Teraview and prepare and review title insurance policies.
- Bookkeep real estate and business transaction trust accounts in compliance with Law Society requirements.
- Communicate professionally with clients, lenders, realtors, surveyors, municipal authorities, and opposing counsel.
- Organize case files, documents, and correspondence systematically using Clio or CosmoLex (knowledge of CosmoLex is an asset).
- Handle calendaring, client scheduling, and general file management.
- Proofread and edit legal documents for accuracy and compliance.
- Maintain confidentiality and full regulatory compliance in all tasks.
Skills
- Minimum 2 years’ experience handling real estate and/or business law transactions in Ontario.
- Law Clerk Diploma or equivalent education/training.
- Experience with Teraview, Unity/Conveyancer, Microsoft Office, and preferably Clio or CosmoLex.
- Familiarity with drafting and closing commercial real estate and small business transaction files.
- Proficiency in handling trust accounting for real estate transactions.
- Excellent organization, multitasking, and problem-solving skills.
- Professional written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work under deadlines while maintaining strong attention to detail.
- Knowledge of Lexis-Nexis or similar legal research tools is an asset.
- Ability to manage independent work with minimal supervision while remaining a strong team player.
