Job Title: Asphalt Lead Hand – Paving Operations (with Winter Work Potential)
Position Summary
LECM (LE Construction & Maintenance) is seeking an experienced and driven Asphalt Lead Hand to lead our paving crew through the construction season. This position is central to running a safe, productive laydown operation — setting the pace of the crew, controlling mat quality, and delivering clean, durable commercial surfaces. The ideal candidate has proven skill on the screed and roller, strong raking and luting hand skills, and the leadership to keep a crew moving efficiently in a fast-paced, quality-focused environment.
As LECM operates year-round, there is strong potential for full-time, year-round employment for candidates open to snow and ice operations during the winter season.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate the paving crew — direct paver operators, roller operators, rakers, and laborers to hit daily production and quality targets.
- Operate the screed to control depth, grade, crown, and finish, monitoring yield and maintaining consistent, tight joints.
- Operate rollers for proper compaction, achieving target density while protecting mat quality and surface smoothness.
- Perform skilled hand work — raking, luting, and shoveling to seal joints, dress edges, and correct defects in the mat.
- Coordinate hot mix delivery with trucking, managing timing and material temperature to keep a steady, uninterrupted workflow.
- Set up and control the job, including line-out, grade checks, and site prep for mill & fill, overlays, patching, and resurfacing.
- Conduct pre- and post-operation inspections of the paver, rollers, and support equipment, reporting issues promptly.
- Champion jobsite safety, enforcing safe work practices in line with LECM's COR-certified safety program and traffic-control requirements.
- Communicate closely with the foreman and site leads, tracking crew and equipment hours and adapting to shifting priorities across sites.
Skills & Qualifications
- Minimum 3–5 years of asphalt paving experience, including time in a lead hand or crew leadership role.
- Proven screed operation experience, with a strong understanding of depth, grade, yield, and joint matching.
- Confident roller operation and knowledge of proper compaction and rolling patterns for a quality finish.
- Strong hand skills — raking, luting, and finishing — with the technique to protect the mat and manage aggregate.
- Valid driver’s license (Class 5 or higher; Class 3 an asset).
- Ability to work early starts and extended hours during peak paving season and weather-driven schedules.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and situational awareness on active commercial sites.
- Reliable, punctual, and safety-focused with strong attention to detail and craftsmanship.
Assets
- Experience with mill & fill, overlays, and parking lot resurfacing is a major asset.
- Concrete, grading, or drainage experience (curbs, sidewalks, catch basins, base work) broadens year-round value.
- Skid steer and loader operation for site prep and material handling.
- Snow and ice / winter operations experience is a strong asset for year-round employment.
- Mechanical aptitude for basic equipment checks and maintenance.
- Previous commercial or municipal paving experience preferred.
Compensation & Schedule
- Wage: $34 – $37 per hour (based on experience and performance).
- Schedule: Daytime construction-season shifts with early starts and extended hours during peak periods (weather-dependent).
- Employment Type: Seasonal, with opportunity for full-time, year-round work through winter snow and ice operations.
