JOB DESCRIPTION: CASUAL RELIEF CHILD AND YOUTH WORKERS - Day Treatment Only (Shift: 8am - 4pm)
REPORTING TO: LIVE IN TREATMENT PROGRAM MANAGER/SUPERVISOR OR DAY TREATMENT PROGRAM MANAGER
POSITION SUMMARY:
Casual Relief Workers are to provide care and supervision according to the agreed treatment plan for adolescents, individually and in groups and guide them in day-to-day activities. Work as part of the interdisciplinary team to ensure the success of the clients within our program.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- CYW Diploma or a recognized equivalent training program such as a degree or diploma in Psychological/Social Sciences
- Criminal Reference Check with Broad Record Check
- Valid Understanding and Managing Aggressive Behaviours (UMAB) Certification
- Valid Standard First Aid/CPR Certification
- Ability to work a minimum of 24 hours in any 2-month period, where shifts are available.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Live-In Treatment Programs – Day and Evening Shifts
Client Care and Supervision
- Maintain a safe, nurturing, and structured environment for youth in accordance with agency policies, professional standards, and the Child, Youth and Family Services Act (CYFSA).
- To follow as closely as possible the established consistent structure and expectations of the program.
- Perform household duties, such as cooking, cleaning, laundry, and minor repairs, with and for the clients.
- Record incident reports, daily logs, and fire drills reports as per legislation and policy.
- Participate in programming with the youth.
- Implement, teach and model skills that support the youth to understand themselves and their emotions focusing on Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, Distress Tolerance and Interpersonal Effectiveness.
- Engage with youth through encouragement, nurturing care, open expression and validation of feelings, constructive challenge, compassionate confrontation, supportive care giving, clear direction and positive behavioural modeling.
- Dispense medication(s) as prescribed by a physician, in accordance with agency medication policies and procedures, including all required documentation and reporting.
- Advocate for youth where necessary.
- Intervene using UMAB and/or First Aid, as required and according to procedures
- Maintain communication with counseling staff on any significant issues in the program, i.e. incident reports, significant issues with peers/family/staff, elopement, restraints, assaults etc.
- Assist in the maintenance of the program facility
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Live-In Treatment Programs – Overnight Awake shifts
Client Care and Supervision
- Maintain a safe, nurturing, and structured environment for youth in accordance with agency policies, professional standards, and the Child, Youth and Family Services Act (CYFSA).
- Conduct regular safety and security checks of the LIT immediately upon the start of the shift, and regular checks throughout the shift.
- Follow each youth’s safety, behavior, and risk management plan, ensuring appropriate supervision levels are maintained.
- Dispense medication(s) as prescribed by a physician, in accordance with agency medication policies and procedures, including all required documentation and reporting. This duty is performed only when authorized and required.
- Conduct and record physical checks on each youth throughout the night, ensuring these checks occur at staggered intervals of every 10 to 15 minutes.
- Ensure that, regardless of gender, there is always at least one staff member present on the top floor whenever more than one youth is occupying the upstairs bedrooms, to support safety and supervision for all youth.
- Remain attentive, awake and available for the youth for the entire duration of the
Duties for Day Treatment Programs:
- Create and maintain a safe and secure environment.
- To follow as closely as possible the established consistent structure and expectations of the program. Each program has a Blue Binder with relevant program and client information listed. It must be read in each program when covering.
- Communicate with the teaching staff in the program
- Follow the life skills programming left by the full time CYW. Topics included, but not limited to anger management, adaptive coping skills, conflict resolution, and problem-solving.
- Dispense medication(s) as prescribed by a physician, following proper procedure and reporting requirements. Complete medication training yearly.
- Advocate for youth where necessary.
- Record incident reports and daily logs (found in the blue binder), as per legislation and policy
- Intervene using UMAB and/or First Aid, as required in accordance with procedures
- Notify On Call for any incidents requiring Duty to Report, or Behaviour/Treatment concerns
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:
- In conjunction with Supervisor/Manager, participate in regular supervision sessions and an annual performance evaluation.
- Maintain certification in UMAB, Standard First Aid and Medication Training.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work is performed in various program settings such as a live-in treatment setting, vehicle, classroom setting or in the community.
- Available shifts are posted on the agency approved communication platform and confirmed/approved by the LIT Program Manager/Supervisor or Day Treatment Program Manager. Shifts are days, evenings and overnight hours and are generally 8-12 hours in duration in compliance with the ESA’s daily and weekly maximum hours provisions. Day Treatment hours are 7.5 hours/day
- When working a 12-hour Night Awake shift, four hours of the shift (typically 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m) involve Child and Youth Worker (CYW) duties. Compensation is adjusted accordingly to reflect the additional responsibilities in compliance with the Employment Standards Act (ESA) and agency pay practices.
