Overview
The Clinic Supervisor is responsible for overseeing students during their clinical practicum experience while supporting the safe and effective operation of the student clinic.
The Clinic Supervisor provides guidance, mentorship, and appropriate clinical feedback to students while ensuring that treatments, documentation, client interactions, and professional conduct remain within the student's current scope of learning.
The Clinic Supervisor works closely with the Clinic Manager, faculty, and campus team to maintain consistent standards of client care, student learning, safety, ethics, and professionalism.
Duties and Responsibilities
Student Supervision and Support
- Supervise and mentor students throughout their practicum shifts.
- Provide guidance related to treatment planning, massage techniques, assessment, client communication, informed consent, draping, body mechanics, remedial exercise, and professional conduct according to the student's current level of learning.
- Visit each treatment room at least twice during each client treatment to monitor student performance, client safety, and treatment progression.
- Provide constructive feedback to students following treatments and throughout the practicum shift.
- Encourage students to develop clinical reasoning, independence, confidence, and professional decision making.
- Identify students requiring additional support and communicate concerns or patterns to the Clinic Manager and appropriate faculty.
- Foster a positive, respectful, and supportive clinical learning environment.
Clinical Standards and Client Care
- Ensure students follow all clinic policies, procedures, safety protocols, and professional expectations.
- Monitor treatments to ensure students remain within their current scope of learning.
- Support students in providing safe, ethical, professional, and client centred care.
- Ensure appropriate intake, informed consent, treatment planning, reassessment, and homecare are completed when applicable.
- Review student documentation and SOAP notes for completeness, professionalism, and accuracy.
- Ensure appropriate infection prevention, hygiene, sanitation, and clinic safety practices are followed.
- Respond appropriately to client concerns and communicate significant concerns to the Clinic Manager.
- Record and submit clinic safety, client, or interpersonal incidents according to HWCC procedures.
Year 1 Student Support
Clinic Supervisors should provide guidance and feedback appropriate to the student's current curriculum, including:
- Draping
- Body mechanics
- Safe treatment practices
- Palpation
- Client intake and informed consent
- Professional communication
- Foundational massage techniques
- Appropriate documentation
Year 2 Student Support
Clinic Supervisors should provide guidance and feedback appropriate to the student's current curriculum, including:
- Assessment tools
- Clinical reasoning and treatment planning
- Therapeutic technique execution
- Safe treatment practices
- Reassessment
- Homecare and remedial exercise
- Professional communication and client management
- Appropriate documentation
The existing job description similarly separates Year 1 supervision around draping, body mechanics, safe treatment, palpation and consent from Year 2 supervision involving assessment, therapeutic techniques and remedial exercise.
Clinic Operations
- Arrive approximately 30 minutes prior to the practicum shift to prepare the clinic for students and clients.
- Assist with client intake, appointments, scheduling, and other clinic processes as required.
- Ensure treatment rooms and common clinic areas are prepared and maintained appropriately.
- Support students with the use of clinic systems and procedures.
- Complete required opening and closing responsibilities.
- Complete the clinic closing checklist at the end of the assigned shift.
- Reconcile the end of day report from point of sale terminals with the Jane App system and electronic transfers received, when assigned.
- Assist with inventory monitoring and communicate supply needs to the appropriate team member.
- Ensure clinic documentation and required administrative tasks are completed before the end of the shift.
Instructional Responsibilities
- Review the Faculty Learning Management System and remain familiar with the curriculum, content, and expected level of learning for the cohorts being supervised.
- Reinforce only HWCC provided curriculum, program textbook material, and approved educational resources.
- Demonstrate practical skills when appropriate and within the student's current curriculum.
- Use only standardized HWCC evaluation methods when formally evaluating students.
- Avoid introducing techniques, assessments, or treatment approaches that students have not yet been taught or that fall outside their current scope of learning.
- Collaborate with Lead Instructors and faculty when students demonstrate areas of concern or require additional instructional support.
Communication Expectations
- Maintain professional and respectful communication with students, clients, faculty, staff, and administration.
- Respond to student communication within 24 hours when responsible for responding.
- Respond to or acknowledge communication from faculty and Home Office within 72 hours.
- Communicate student performance concerns, safety concerns, client concerns, and interpersonal incidents to the Clinic Manager.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student academic performance, client information, incidents, and other confidential college matters.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with students and clients at all times.
Professional Development
- Complete required modules of the HWCC Faculty Development Series and associated evaluations.
- Participate in required professional development and training provided by HWCC.
- When unable to attend required training live, complete the assigned recording, reading, or alternative training as directed.
- Remain familiar with current clinic policies, Faculty Success Guide requirements, and relevant HWCC procedures.
Qualifications
- Graduate of a recognized Massage Therapy program.
- Minimum of two years of professional Massage Therapy experience where required by the applicable provincial or program standards.
- Must be in good standing with the applicable regulatory body or professional association.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification.
- Strong clinical Massage Therapy knowledge and practical skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to provide constructive feedback while supporting student learning and development.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to supervise multiple students and client treatments simultaneously.
- Comfortable using clinic scheduling, documentation, and point of sale systems.
- Previous experience in teaching, mentoring, supervision, or leadership is considered an asset.
- Commitment to maintaining high standards of ethical conduct, client care, student safety, and professionalism.
