Position Summary
The General Manager is responsible for the overall performance, leadership, and profitability of Company operations. The Company is a mechanical contractor serving commercial and industrial clients across Edmonton. This opportunity allows for full accountability in day-to-day business operations. The General Manager works closely with department leaders to align field services, sales, and administrative functions with company goals, and acts as a key driver of operational success, customer satisfaction, and sustainable growth.
Key Responsibilities
Organizational Leadership & Direction
- Set the overall direction and priorities for the organization and communicate them clearly to the team.
- Act as the central point of alignment across estimating, operations, purchasing, and sales functions, ensuring everyone is working toward the same goals.
- Bring clarity and decisiveness in fast-moving situations, acting as a guiding force for the team as priorities shift quickly.
- Manage overall performance of the organization by balancing short-term demands against the company's longer-term direction.
Financial Performance & Purchasing Oversight
- Oversee day-to-day operations across plumbing, HVAC, service, and construction functions, ensuring the organization meets its priorities.
- Oversee the purchasing function and ensure procurement practices support project cost and schedule requirements, bringing in the right skill set where gaps exist.
- Maintain visibility into estimating and pricing to ensure the organization can respond quickly and competitively, ensuring fast turnaround estimates on large-scale projects.
People Leadership & Performance Culture
- Provide leadership and direction to department managers and their teams, including plumbing, HVAC, sales, and administrative staff.
- Foster a culture of accountability, trust, safety, and continuous improvement.
- Set improvement goals and support career development across the organization.
Customer & Business Development
- Ensure that that the highest quality of customer service is maintained across all lines of business.
- Build and maintain strong, professional relationships with key strategic partners and clients representing the company in a professional and enthusiastic manner.
Safety & Compliance
- Champion a safety-first culture across all operations and job sites.
- Ensure compliance with relevant building codes, licensing requirements, and regulatory obligations in Alberta.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry standards and best practices affecting plumbing and HVAC operations.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in the plumbing, HVAC, or mechanical construction industry.
- Post-secondary education in business, construction management, or a related field is an asset; equivalent experience will be considered.
- Hands-on experience with mechanical estimating is required, with the ability to produce accurate, competitive estimates for commercial and light industrial work.
- Senior management or executive leadership experience is required.
- Proven track record managing operations, sales, and financial performance for a company.
- Strong mechanical industry background, with working knowledge of plumbing and HVAC systems and operations preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and develop managers and cross-functional teams.
- Strong understanding of building codes, licensing, and regulatory requirements applicable to mechanical contractors in Alberta.
- Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills.
