Founded in 2002, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is a not-for-profit organization tasked with the safe, long-term management of Canada’s intermediate- and high-level radioactive waste, in a manner that protects people and the environment for generations to come.
The NWMO has been guided for more than 20 years by a dedicated team of world-class scientists, engineers and Indigenous Knowledge Holders who are developing innovative and collaborative solutions for nuclear waste management. In 2024, the NWMO selected Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation and the Township of Ignace as the hosts for the site for a deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel.
Development Intern Student - Corporate Communications
One (1) Position Available
Employment Period: 4-month Term from August 31 – December 23, 2026
Position Location: Toronto Head Office – 22 St. Clair Avenue East (effective July 2026, 30 Adelaide St East)
We are currently seeking an enthusiastic Developmental Communications Student placement for our Corporate Communications team. The successful candidate’s primary responsibility will be supporting communications activities across the department, including social media, internal communications, and corporate communications.
The Communications team operates in a fast-paced, creative environment and interacts with teams across the business. We are a not-for-profit organization building deep geological repositories – national infrastructure projects that will have a lasting impact for generations to come. This work brings the opportunity to gain communications experience in multiple disciplines. This role is based in our Toronto headquarters.
- Support communication operations and activities, including learning and supporting website and social media activations, media relations, event planning, internal communications, and overall corporate communications.
- Support writing communications materials, and developing and implementing communications plans, for both internal and external audiences.
- Provide project management support to the department by updating and maintaining calendars in Wrike (a project management tool) as needed.
- Participate in the collation and management of communication reporting. Assist with evolving our metrics dashboard and activity tracking for ongoing project management and reporting.
We operate a full-service communications team within the NWMO, and to the extent time allows beyond the duties described above, the co-op student may be assigned to support other communications activities.
- An actively registered student in a post-secondary program (e.g. university or college degree, post-graduate certificate) in public relations or communicationsA quick learner that can work independently and as part of a team.
- Highly organized and familiar with the principles of good communications and project management using digital tools.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills – written and verbal.
- Excellent computer skills – Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Working knowledge of social media platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube and X would be considered an asset.
Eligibility
Students must be returning full-time to their program at their college/university following the completion of their work term or be full-time students requiring the work term or co-op placement to graduate.
Students must be eligible to work in Canada and must be able to meet security clearance requirements.
Students must be available to work full-time, 35 hours per week, 7 hours per day, during regular business hours. Hybrid Work: Students must be able to work a minimum of 3 days in the Office Location, with Tuesday and Wednesday being required days in office.
