Manager, Labour Relations
The Association of Law Officers of the Crown (ALOC) represents approximately 850 lawyers and 100 articling and summer students employed by the Government of Ontario. ALOC members play a critical role in supporting the rule of law and the administration of justice. ALOC advances and protects the professional and collective interests of its membership through principled advocacy, collective bargaining, and labour relations representation.
ALOC is seeking a skilled and experienced labour relations professional to join our team in a newly posted vacancy.
Position Summary
The Manager, Labour Relations provides expert guidance on all labour relations matters for ALOC. This is a senior individual contributor role leading complex grievance and representation work, supporting collective bargaining, and serving as a trusted advisor. The role operates within a member-driven governance structure and works closely with ALOC’s elected full-time President and volunteer Board of Directors.
Key Responsibilities
Labour Relations & Strategic Advisory
- Provide expert interpretation and application of the Framework Agreement, Collective Agreement, relevant legislation, case law, and OPS/MAG policies.
- Identify emerging labour relations trends and risks, and provide advice to the President and Board.
- Ensure a consistent and principled approach to labour relations aligned with ALOC’s mandate.
Member Advocacy & Representation
- Lead grievance processes, including mediation, arbitration, and complex or precedent-setting matters.
- Represent members in disciplinary, investigatory, and accommodation related meetings.
- Provide expert advice and representation on issues involving equity, accessibility, discrimination, harassment, and accommodation.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for members seeking advice on workplace and labour relations issues, providing guidance on complex and sensitive matters.
- Maintain and analyze grievance data to identify trends and inform member advocacy.
Collective Bargaining Support
- Support collective bargaining through research, analysis, and proposal development.
- Monitor labour relations and bargaining trends to inform strategy and priorities.
- Prepare clear and accessible communications for members regarding bargaining developments.
Stakeholder Engagement & Communication
- Represent ALOC in interactions with members, MAG/TBS, and other stakeholders.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with external stakeholders.
- Lead member engagement initiatives, including meetings, presentations, and direct outreach.
- Deliver presentations and lead discussions with members on workplace and labour relations issues, including seminars and town halls.
- Participate in member committee meetings, providing advice and subject-matter expertise on labour relations matters.
- Prepare briefing, communications, and other materials to support governance processes and decision-making by the President and Board.
Operations & Reporting
- Maintain accurate grievance and labour relations records and data.
- Support continuous improvement of processes, tools, and systems.
Additional Responsibilities
- Participate in ALOC’s annual conference and key member events.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Experience
- Demonstrated labour relations experience, including grievance handling, arbitration processes, and advocacy.
- Strong knowledge of collective agreement interpretation, labour and employment legislation, and workplace accommodation principles.
- Experience supporting or participating in collective bargaining is an asset.
- Excellent judgment, analytical skills, and ability to manage complex and sensitive matters independently.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey complex information clearly and effectively.
- Proven ability to build credibility and maintain effective relationships with members, leadership, and external stakeholders.
- Experience in the public sector is an asset.
Compensation
Salary range: $100,000 – $130,000, commensurate with experience.

Work Location & Arrangements
This role is based in downtown Toronto and requires regular and meaningful in-office presence. The organization supports flexible work arrangements, including the possibility of hybrid work, at its discretion and based on business needs.
