Position Overview
Rolling Mix Concrete is seeking a motivated Apprentice Heavy Duty Mechanic (2nd to 4th year preferred) to join our shop team in Edmonton. Reporting to the Shop Manager and working under the guidance of our Journeyperson Mechanics, the Apprentice HD Mechanic assists with the maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of our fleet of ready-mix concrete trucks, heavy equipment, and support vehicles. This is a hands-on role and an excellent opportunity to build your hours, sharpen your skills on a diverse vocational fleet, and grow toward your journeyperson certification with the support of an experienced team.
Responsibilities
- Assist with and perform preventative maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on ready-mix concrete trucks (including mixer drums, chutes, and hydraulic systems), loaders, and other heavy equipment, under the supervision of a Journeyperson Mechanic as appropriate to your apprenticeship level.
- Assist with diagnosing and repairing engines, transmissions, differentials, brake systems (air and hydraulic), electrical systems, suspension, and steering components.
- Support troubleshooting of hydraulic, pneumatic, and electronic control systems, including the use of diagnostic software and scan tools.
- Assist with welding and fabrication repairs as required and as skills allow.
- Complete accurate and timely work orders, inspection reports, and maintenance records in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate with the Shop Manager and Journeyperson Mechanics on repair priorities to minimize fleet downtime.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, and ensure tools and shop equipment are in good working condition.
- Comply with all RMC safety policies, Alberta OHS legislation, and safe work procedures, including lock-out/tag-out and working around rotating drum equipment.
- Use the Teams chat when requesting parts and tools, communicating effectively with the Parts Team and other key stakeholders.
- Actively participate in on-the-job learning, ask questions, and apply feedback from Journeyperson Mechanics.
- Maintain apprenticeship records and attend required technical training in accordance with Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training requirements.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Registered apprentice in Alberta as a Heavy Equipment Technician or Truck and Transport Mechanic; 2nd to 4th year preferred (blue book/apprenticeship record in good standing).
- Proof of enrolment or standing with Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (or willingness to register with employer sponsorship).
- Hands-on experience with heavy-duty trucks and/or off-road equipment; experience with ready-mix or vocational fleets is an asset.
- Developing diagnostic and troubleshooting skills across mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, service manuals, and technical documentation.
- Valid Class 5 driver's licence with a clean driver's abstract; air brake endorsement (Q) is an asset.
- Physical ability to perform the demands of the role, including lifting up to 50 lbs, working at heights, and working in confined spaces around equipment.
- First Aid/CPR certification is an asset.

Hours of Work
- A rotating schedule of 1 week on days followed by 1 week on afternoons.
- Shifts are approximately 8-10 hours in length and span Monday – Friday with a rotating Saturday schedule.
Work Environment
- Shop-based position at our Edmonton West facility, with occasional field service calls.
- Exposure to noise, dust, grease, and variable temperatures typical of a heavy-duty shop environment
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required at all times, including CSA-approved steel-toed boots, safety glasses, hearing protection, and gloves; task-specific PPE will be provided
- This is moderately strenuous work. Mechanics frequently lift material up to 50 lbs.
- Machinery and tools require frequent and consistent exertion on arms, hands, and fingers.
Applicants will be required to undergo a pre-employment drug, alcohol test and fit for work testing as a condition of employment.
