Pollock's Hardware has served Winnipeg's North End since 1922. After 85 years as a family-owned general hardware store, community members reopened it as a co-operative in 2008. The co-op now has over 4500 members and continues to be a North End institution as well as an important community meeting place.

About the role
Pollock’s Hardware Co-op is looking for a General Manager to lead all aspects of the business. As manager of Winnipeg’s only remaining independent hardware store, you will work closely with the Board of Directors and serve as the liaison between the Co-op, its staff, and our customers. You will oversee day-to-day operations, including; finances, staff management, inventory, merchandising and maintaining our community presence.
Responsibilities include
Store operations: Keep a clean, well-stocked store running smoothly. Manage scheduling, security, health and safety, compliance, and customer service.
People and culture: Hire, develop, and manage performance to support a team that reflects co-operative values.
Sales and growth: Drive sales through strong floor presence, staff coaching, and product knowledge. Build community partnerships, identify grant opportunities, and develop and implement action plans when performance gaps appear.
Finance and inventory: Manage cash flow, budget, payroll,expenses and control shrinkage, in accordance with sales data.
Board and community: Deliver monthly board reports, support the AGM, and represent Pollock's as an active presence in North End organizations and partnerships.
Communications: Oversee online presence, including all social media and website maintenance. In coordination with the board, serve as the store's primary spokesperson.
What we are looking for
Demonstrated experience in retail or co-op management
Experience leading diverse teams
Strong financial literacy including budget management, payroll oversight, and the ability to read and act on financial statements
Proficiency in Excel and standard office software, bookkeeping software and POS systems
Valid driver's licence and access to a personal vehicle
Experience identifying and applying for grants, with a track record of meeting deadlines
A strong eye for merchandising and creating a well-presented, shoppable store
Managing organizational social media
Familiarity with inventory management systems and loss prevention practices
Knowledge of applicable employment, health and safety regulations
Experience sourcing new products, building relationships with local and independent vendors, and managing the full receiving process including orders, deliveries, and inventory records
Creative problem-solver who finds practical solutions in a resource-conscious environment
Assets
Knowledge of hardware, tools, and paint products
Working conditions
This is a permanent, full-time, on-site position combining time on the sales floor as well as time at a desk. The role requires occasional availability to respond to security or operational issues outside standard business hours.
