MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING REQUIRED:
- High school completion with job related options required.
- CALAS certification is an asset and should be obtained on the job within a 3 year period.
- Must complete the U of M on line animal ethics/policy course prior to end of probation period.
EXPERIENCE:
- Prior experience with research animals, pet animals or farm animals is a definite asset.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Adept at restraining small animals with humane technique required.
- Able to sex rodents at a young age required.
- Attention to detail and good powers of observation are essential.
- Able to lift 50 pound feed bags, and to withstand rather adverse environments created by animal odours, dander, bedding dust and high heat and humidity while performing a physically demanding job required.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
OTHER JOB RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Maintains a philosophy consistent with using animals in research required.
- Free from allergens to animals and animal by-products and cleaning compounds required.
Responsibilities:
- Performs daily care, including feeding, watering, and changing cages or bedding.
- Conducts cleaning processes on cages and accessories, including operating the cage washer.
- Performs animal counts, observes animals, and reports any issues within the CACS animal tracking software, LabTracks.
- Sanitizes and disinfects animal rooms and all facility support areas.
- Assists with animal restraint for examination or manipulation by others.
- Weighs and determines the sex of animals.
- May perform euthanasia on animals when required.
- May be required to perform related duties not exceeding skills and capabilities as required.
This will be an existing regular continuing part time position 0-35 hours/week
