Job Overview
The Junior Estimator is responsible for independently preparing accurate and competitive estimates for special projects, from initial review through tender submission and project handoff. Reporting directly to the Manager Special Projects, the Junior Estimator will take ownership of assigned estimating opportunities, including reviewing project requirements, completing detailed quantity takeoffs, obtaining and evaluating supplier and subcontractor pricing, identifying risks and developing project costs.
The role requires a strong understanding of construction, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while maintaining clear communication with the Special Projects Manager and broader project team.
Overall outcomes
Produce clear, organized and accurate estimates for special projects through careful review of project requirements, detailed quantity takeoffs and reliable pricing. Support the Estimating team by maintaining accurate documentation, obtaining competitive quotations and identifying potential project risks and cost considerations. Develop strong working relationships with suppliers and subcontractors while continually building construction knowledge and estimating capabilities.
Responsibilities
- Review drawings, specifications, proposals and related project documents to identify scope, materials, labour and time requirements.
- Complete accurate quantity takeoffs for assigned projects using drawings, specifications and other available information.
- Assist with the preparation of estimates, budgets and project cost summaries.
- Obtain pricing and quotations from suppliers and subcontractors for materials, labour and equipment.
- Prepare and distribute tender documents and follow up on outstanding quotations.
- Maintain and update a current directory of suppliers and subcontractors.
- Assist with reviewing and comparing supplier and subcontractor bids to ensure scope, pricing and inclusions are accurately captured.
- Identify discrepancies, omissions and potential cost impacts within drawings, specifications and quotations and bring them to the attention of the Estimator.
- Assist with assessing project site conditions and logistics that may impact construction costs or methodology.
- Attend site visits, pre-bid meetings and other project meetings as required.
- Assist with identifying potential project risks related to scope, procurement, scheduling, site conditions, materials and construction methodology.
- Maintain organized estimating files, tender documents, quotations and supporting information.
- Assist with preparing tender submissions and project cost summaries.
- Communicate with suppliers, subcontractors and internal team members to gather and clarify project information.
- Support the Estimator and Project Manager during the transition of awarded projects by ensuring relevant estimating information is complete and organized.
- Continuously develop knowledge of construction materials, methods, costs and industry practices.
- Perform other estimating and special project duties as required.
- Prepare a project cost summary including labor, equipment and temporary services, materials, cash allowances and contingencies, building permits, insurance, safety, subcontractors, overhead and profit, taxes and staff fees.
- Prepare turn-over package including all tender documents, quotes and trade directory for the Project Manager.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
- 1–3 years of experience in construction and/or estimating.
- On job training will be provided.
- Post-secondary education in construction, engineering, architectural technology, business or a related field considered an asset.
- Construction industry experience or hands-on trade experience preferred.
- Valid Driver’s License.
SKILLS
- Strong mathematical skills, attention to detail and data analysis.
- Strong construction knowledge and understanding of the industry’s processes and materials.
- Strong understanding of construction documents.
- Competency in Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, OneNote and Project.
- Excellent organizational, time-management and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Previous experience with Smartbid considered an asset.
- Familiarity with Bluebeam considered an asset.

Pay: $50,000.00-$70,000.00 per year
