Black Controls is a growing industrial automation company based in Barrie, Ontario. We design and build custom automation systems and are continuing to scale—both in project size and team capability.
As we grow, we are strengthening our internal structure and are looking for a Finance Manager to take ownership of the company’s financial clarity and support better decision-making across the business.
The Role
This is not a traditional accounting role.
The Finance Manager is responsible for ensuring financial health, visibility, and discipline of the business. This role goes beyond reporting—you will be expected to understand how the business operates and provide insight that supports leadership decisions.
You will work with existing accounting support and take ownership of how finance is structured, reported, and used across the company.
-
Own monthly financial reporting and ensure accuracy and timeliness
-
Maintain and improve our cash flow forecasting
-
Support budgeting, forecasting, and cost control across the business
-
Provide visibility into project/job costing and margins
-
Translate financial data into clear, actionable insights
-
Support leadership with decision-making and strategic planning
-
Identify financial risks and opportunities early
-
Oversee AP, AR, and payroll functions (supported by internal and contract resources)
-
Ensure consistency, accuracy, and structure in financial processes
-
Improve and standardize financial workflows and reporting
-
Work with external accountants and financial partners
-
Support year-end processes and compliance requirements
You will be supported by:
-
Internal accounting/admin support
-
Contract bookkeeping support
You will lead and structure the finance function—balancing hands-on involvement with effective delegation and building a scalable foundation as the company grows.
-
Strong ownership mindset—you take responsibility without being asked
-
Experience managing finance in a small-to-mid-sized business
-
Comfortable working in a growing, evolving company environment
-
Ability to turn financial data into clear, actionable insight
-
Organized, structured, and detail-oriented
-
Willing to ask questions, escalate issues, and improve systems
-
5+ years of progressive experience in finance, accounting, or related leadership roles
-
Experience in a manufacturing, engineering, or project-based business strongly preferred
-
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or related field
-
CPA designation (or working toward) is an asset
-
Strong understanding of:
-
Financial reporting and analysis
-
Cash flow management
-
Job/project costing
-
Budgeting and forecasting
-
Experience overseeing accounting functions (AP, AR, payroll)
-
Proficiency with accounting and ERP systems (e.g., Zoho or similar)
-
Advanced Excel skills
To ensure clarity, this role is not:
-
A pure bookkeeping or data entry role
-
A “hands-off” reporting position
-
A corporate-only accounting function disconnected from operations
We are looking for someone who understands and contributes to the business, not just the numbers.
Within the first 6 months:
-
Financial reporting is consistent, accurate, and on time
-
Cash flow visibility is clear and proactive
-
Leadership has reliable data to make decisions
-
Financial processes are more structured and scalable
-
Be part of a company that is actively growing and evolving
-
Have a direct impact on business decisions and outcomes
-
Build and shape a scalable finance function
-
Work in an environment where your insights matter—not just your reports
-
Competitive compensation and benefits
-
RRSP match, extended health care, dental care, vision care and employee assistance program
