Job Description:
The Receiver / Hardware Associate is responsible for supporting both store receiving operations and customer-facing hardware sales activities. This role ensures accurate receiving and inventory handling of incoming shipments (limited weekly deliveries), while also providing strong customer service, merchandising support, and general retail operations assistance.
The position is primarily a hardware associate role with scheduled receiving responsibilities based on delivery days.
Responsibilities:
Receiving & Inventory Management (Scheduled Receiving Days)
- Receive and unload incoming shipments from trucks and vendors
- Check incoming merchandise against invoices, packing slips, and purchase orders to identify shortages, damages, or discrepancies
- Record and report receiving issues to management
- Enter receiving data and maintain accurate inventory records in store systems
- Label, sort, and place merchandise in appropriate storage or sales areas
- Assist with cycle counts and annual inventory counts
- Process and follow up on special orders and backorders
- Maintain organization and cleanliness of receiving and storage areas
Customer Assistance
- Greet customers promptly upon entry and provide assistance within expected service standards
- Assist customers in locating products in-store and online (homehardware.ca)
- Help customers identify materials needed to complete projects
- Provide advice, product information, and basic project guidance
- Assist customers with loading large or heavy items when required
- Use open-ended questions to determine customer needs
- Ensure customers have a positive shopping experience and resolve concerns when needed
- Communicate product knowledge clearly and accurately
Store Maintenance & Merchandising
- Maintain clean, tidy, and well-organized sales floor, storage areas, and receiving space
- Build, maintain, and dismantle promotional and seasonal displays
- Ensure pricing, signage, and merchandising are accurate and up to date
- Restock shelves and rotate inventory as required
- Assist with housekeeping duties throughout the store and at end of shift
Cashier & Point-of-Sale Support (as required)
- Operate POS system accurately and efficiently
- Process sales, returns, and special orders according to store policy
- Balance cash, complete end-of-shift reconciliation, and follow cash handling procedures
- Assist with training of new cashiers when needed
- Verify payment methods (credit card checks, expiry dates, signatures where applicable)
General Store Duties
- Participate in store meetings, training sessions, and required learning activities
- Follow all store policies and procedures including loss prevention and safety standards
- Assist with unloading trucks and moving merchandise as needed
- Page staff or communicate information over PA system when required
- Monitor for theft or suspicious activity and follow store policy
- Maintain safe work practices in compliance with provincial and federal regulations
- Perform additional duties as assigned by management
Skills and Qualifications:
· High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
· Previous retail, warehouse, or hardware experience considered an asset
· Ability to safely lift and move heavy items regularly
· Strong attention to detail, especially for receiving and inventory accuracy
· Basic computer skills for inventory and POS systems
· Strong customer service skills and communication ability
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team
· Reliable, organized, and able to manage shifting priorities
· Bilingualism is considered an asset.
Working Conditions
- Retail store and backroom/receiving environment
- Regular physical activity including standing, lifting, bending, and carrying
- Exposure to changing temperatures during receiving activities
- Occasional early morning or delivery-based schedule requirements
- Available for night and weekends
Working relationships
o Reports directly to Store Manager.
