Columbia Bitulithic is a recognized name in British Columbia's road construction industry. Following the recent acquisition of the Prince George asphalt plant and related assets, Columbia Bitulithic has returned to the Northern BC market under new ownership.
While the name has a long history in the region, today's Columbia Bitulithic combines an experienced local workforce with a fresh approach to asphalt paving, highway construction, municipal infrastructure, and aggregate production.
We are building a team focused on safety, quality, accountability, and long-term relationships with our clients and communities. As we continue to grow, we are seeking experienced Asphalt Rakermen to support our paving operations throughout Northern British Columbia.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Foreman and Superintendent, the Asphalt Rakerman will be responsible for the placement, adjustment, and finishing of asphalt materials during paving operations. This position plays a critical role in achieving proper grade, joint quality, surface texture, and overall pavement appearance.
The successful candidate will work closely with paving crews, screed operators, roller operators, truck drivers, and project supervision to ensure asphalt paving activities are completed safely, efficiently, and to specification.
This position is seasonal full-time, with compensation and duration dependent on experience, qualifications, and workload.
Key Responsibilities
Asphalt Paving Operations
· Rake, lute, and finish asphalt materials to required grade and surface tolerances.
· Construct and maintain longitudinal and transverse joints.
· Perform handwork around structures, manholes, valves, curbs, and tie-ins.
· Correct surface irregularities and deficiencies during paving operations.
· Assist in achieving smoothness, density, and quality requirements.
· Support paving crews in maintaining production and paving efficiency.
Quality & Workmanship
Monitor asphalt mat appearance and identify quality concerns.
· Assist with achieving specified pavement grades and crossfalls.
· Work closely with screed and roller operators to maintain paving quality.
· Ensure finished work meets project specifications and client expectations.
· Maintain a high standard of workmanship and attention to detail.
Safety & Teamwork
· Promote a strong safety culture and lead by example.
· Follow company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
· Participate in daily safety meetings and hazard assessments.
· Maintain awareness of surrounding personnel, equipment, and traffic conditions.
· Support operational teams in achieving production and quality objectives.
Qualifications
Experience
· Minimum 2 years of asphalt paving experience preferred.
· Previous experience as an Asphalt Rakerman considered a strong asset.
· Experience on highway, municipal, commercial, or subdivision paving projects preferred.
· Familiarity with paving equipment and asphalt paving procedures.
Technical Skills
Strong understanding of:
· Asphalt paving operations and finishing techniques
· Joint construction and tie-in procedures
· Pavement grades, slopes, and surface tolerances
· Asphalt placement and compaction processes
· Construction safety requirements and best practices
Communication & Organization
· Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
· Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
· Strong work ethic and positive attitude.
· Ability to work flexible hours during peak construction operations.
Certifications & Requirements
· Valid Class 5 Driver's License considered an asset.
· Construction safety training considered an asset.
· Must be a member of, or willing and eligible to join, the applicable union.
· Additional paving or construction-related certifications considered an asset.
