Clinical Assistant (International Medical Graduate – IMG)
Position Summary
We are seeking a compassionate, detail-oriented, and highly motivated Clinical Assistant (International Medical Graduate) to join our specialty pain clinic. Working under the supervision of physicians and healthcare professionals, the Clinical Assistant will support patient care, clinical operations, and administrative functions while utilizing their medical education and clinical knowledge to enhance the patient experience and support the multidisciplinary pain management team.
This role is ideal for an International Medical Graduate seeking Canadian clinical experience in a collaborative outpatient specialty setting.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Support
- Assist physicians during patient consultations and procedures as directed.
- Obtain and document patient histories, medication lists, pain assessments, and relevant clinical information.
- Prepare examination and procedure rooms.
- Measure and record vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, height, and weight.
- Support patient flow by escorting patients to examination rooms and ensuring timely clinic operations.
- Assist with patient education regarding treatment plans, procedures, and follow-up care under physician direction.
Documentation and Medical Records
- Accurately document clinical encounters in the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
- Prepare consultation notes, referral summaries, and follow-up documentation for physician review.
- Review incoming medical records, imaging reports, laboratory results, and specialist consultations.
- Ensure patient charts are complete and organized prior to appointments.
Care Coordination
- Coordinate referrals, diagnostic investigations, and follow-up appointments.
- Communicate with referring physicians, pharmacies, hospitals, and allied healthcare providers.
- Facilitate continuity of care for patients with chronic pain and complex medical conditions.
- Track pending investigations and assist in obtaining required medical documentation.
Procedure Support
- Assist with preparation for interventional pain procedures and clinic-based treatments.
- Maintain clinical supplies and ensure equipment is available and functioning appropriately.
- Adhere to infection prevention and control protocols.
Administrative Support
- Assist with appointment scheduling and patient communications as required.
- Respond to patient inquiries within scope and direct clinical concerns appropriately.
- Support quality improvement initiatives and clinic projects.
Qualifications Required
- Medical degree (MD or equivalent) obtained outside Canada.
- Strong understanding of clinical medicine, medical terminology, and patient assessment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records and computer applications.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary healthcare environment.
Preferred
- Previous clinical experience in pain management, family medicine, internal medicine, anesthesiology, physiatry, neurology, orthopedics, or rehabilitation medicine.
- Completion of Medical Council of Canada examinations (MCCQE Part I or equivalent) an asset.
- Previous Canadian healthcare experience.
- Current CPR/BLS certification an asset.
