The Christmas Tree Council of Nova Scotia (CTCNS) is a non-profit organization that exists to serve the needs of Christmas tree and greenery producers in Nova Scotia and acts as an umbrella organization over the three regional associations. Members benefit from promotions, advocacy, programs, and services provided by the associations and Council, including applied research and education of growers/new entrants through the efforts of the CTCNS Research Team. To assist in this effort, we are seeking an individual to fill the Christmas Tree Technician Position. The Christmas Tree Technician will report to the Research Team at CTCNS. There is 1 position available, this position will be offered to a successful applicant. Applications may be retained for future opportunities.
· Regular assessment of various field trials across the province (including setting up, maintaining, and collecting data as directed)
· Data entry (including file management and correspondence as appropriate) supporting the CTCNS Research projects
· Support of technical education and training activities
· Provide regular reporting (including quarterly journal articles, quarterly updates, regular team meetings)
· Aid the Christmas Tree Specialist with sampling (soil, foliar, pest, etc.)
· Support technical resource development (through multiple platforms) as requested.
Project work may require extended periods of time outdoors; applicants must be able to work in a variety of conditions. This position requires data collection and entry for various projects, organization and attention to detail are essential. The position will be based remotely and will require frequent travel within the province (mainly focused between Lunenburg County and Antigonish/Guysborough) with travel expenses reimbursed.
The successful applicant must have a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle. The position’s hours are flexible, as discussed with the immediate supervisor, however early mornings, late afternoons, and occasional weekend work will be required. Additionally, the nature of this position requires the ability to lift 20 kg, as well as physical aptitudes to allow for kneeling, bending, carrying supplies, reaching, use of equipment, etc.
The successful applicant will be a self-starter and have the ability to work independently with limited supervision, as well as with a team. Successful applicants must be adaptable and have a commitment to learning. An agriculture, natural resources, or forestry background would be considered an asset but is not a requirement.
Through the work term, the Technician will gain practical experience in the following areas:
· A broader understanding of the Nova Scotia agricultural industry through applied research projects and in-person practice.
· Become familiar with the methods, constraints, and challenges of conducting applied research in uncontrolled environments.
· Accurately manage and enter research data.
· Improved soft skills including communication (both written and verbal), presentation skills, working with multi-disciplinary groups, relationship building, and time management.
The Christmas Tree Technician will build relationships with Christmas tree growers, promotional support, and members of the public through the course of their work.
: Minimum completion of first year of study
: Undergraduate (Agriculture, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, Biology, Forestry)
: Wages based on experience, plus mileage and reasonable travel costs. : Minimum 35 hours per week; some flexibility in working hours required, 1-year term with possibility of extension.
