Job Overview
Term: September 2026 – approximately July 2027
We are a professional family in Victoria seeking a warm, highly attentive and proactive nanny to care for our 3-month old newborn and provide household support from Monday - Friday, with occasional evening and weekend support.
We are looking for someone who genuinely enjoys engaging with babies and takes a responsive, child-led approach to infant care. Our priority is not simply following a predetermined schedule or completing a list of activities—it is noticing our little ones cues, understanding what they may need, and adapting the day accordingly.
The right person will be affectionate, energetic, observant and comfortable using their own judgment while also respecting and implementing our preferences as parents. We value open communication and are looking for someone who sees childcare as a collaborative relationship with our family.
This is a full-time position intended to continue through approximately July/August 2027, and is a live-out nanny position.
We are specifically looking for someone who:
- Adjusts outings, activities and the day's plans based on how the child is doing
- Understands that some crying is normal but makes a genuine effort to understand and respond when a baby is persistently distressed
- Can distinguish between "the schedule says it is nap time" and "this baby is actually ready for a nap."
- Enjoys getting on the floor, playing, talking, reading, singing, walking and actively engaging with an infant.
- Is highly attentive to an infant's hunger, tiredness, overstimulation, discomfort and need for connection or movement
- Is curious and observant and will ask questions when unsure rather than making assumptions about our preferences.
- Can receive feedback openly and change their approach when something isn't working.
- Is comfortable with parents being home or working from home and views parental involvement as normal rather than disruptive.
- Is dependable, punctual and comfortable with a family whose schedules occasionally require some flexibility.
We don't expect someone to parent exactly as we do. We do need someone who is willing and able to learn our child, understand our priorities, and adapt their caregiving accordingly.
Primary Childcare Responsibilities
- Provide attentive daily care including bottles, feeding, diapering, hygiene and sleep support.
- Prepare age-appropriate baby meals and snacks as solids are introduced.
- Clean bottles, feeding equipment and child-related dishes.
- Maintain the nursery and children's areas.
- Manage child laundry, bedding and related supplies.
- Plan developmentally appropriate play and activities.
- Read, sing, talk and actively engage throughout the day.
- Provide daily outdoor time when appropriate.
- Attend age-appropriate classes, playgroups and community activities.
- Take the child on walks and age-appropriate outings, adjusting plans according to his needs that day.
- Transport the child as required using a properly installed car seat.
- Keep parents informed about feeding, naps, activities, mood and significant events during the day.
Family & Household Support
When the baby is sleeping or otherwise settled and childcare responsibilities are complete, responsibilities may include:
- General tidying of common areas and the nursery.
- Light vacuuming of high-use areas.
- Loading/unloading the dishwasher and keeping kitchen surfaces tidy.
- Household towels and bedding.
- Limited parent laundry.
- Garbage, recycling and compost.
- Diaper pail maintenance.
- Watering indoor plants.
- Basic pet/litter-box care.
- Grocery shopping and occasional household errands.
Requirements
- At least 3 years of professional childcare experience.
- Significant hands-on experience caring for newborns and infants
- Strong references from 2–3 previous childcare employers.
- Valid driver's licence and reliable personal vehicle.
- Current criminal record check.
- Current Emergency Child Care First Aid/CPR certification.
- Legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Comfortable working in a home with pets.
- Comfortable working alongside parents who may periodically be home during the workday.
Schedule
Monday–Friday, approximately 7:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
Approximately 35-40 hours per week.
This position will include a written averaging agreement in accordance with B.C. employment standards. The regular schedule will generally be Monday–Friday; however, some flexibility in the distribution of scheduled hours is an important part of the position.
With reasonable advance notice, hours may occasionally be shifted—for example, to an evening, a different weekday, or an occasional weekend day—to accommodate the family's schedule. We are looking for someone who values a predictable core schedule while also being comfortable with mutually planned flexibility.
Compensation
$28–33/hour gross, depending on experience and qualifications.
