REGISTERED VETERINARY TECHNICIAN (FULL-TIME CONTRACT)
TITLE: Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) – 1 position
REPORTS TO: Senior Manager, Animal Care
LOCATION: 190 Hanlon Creek Blvd., Guelph ON
TYPE: Full-time Contract (until March 31, 2028); 32–40 hours/week; Schedule requires working both Saturday and Sunday each week, plus an additional 2–3 weekdays.

The Opportunity:
GHS is on the lookout for a full-time Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) to join our Animal Care team. This role offers a hands-on opportunity to directly support the health, welfare, and wellbeing of animals in GHS care while contributing to our growing veterinary services and shelter medicine program. You will play an important role in providing high-quality medical and preventive care, supporting surgical procedures, monitoring patients, administering treatments and medications, and maintaining strong infection prevention and control practices.

What You’ll Do:
- Administer medications, treatments, and vaccines
- Conduct intake and ongoing physical health assessments
- Monitor animals for changes in health and wellbeing
- Manage and monitor hospitalized animals and those requiring more intensive medical care including patients receiving IV therapy
- Use independent clinical judgement to assess patient needs and recognize when veterinary consultation or escalation is required
- Support surgical procedures, including preparation, induction, intubation, anesthesia monitoring, recovery, and post-operative care
- Collect blood, urine, and other diagnostic samples
- Perform in-house laboratory testing and diagnostics
- Provide safe, humane, low-stress handling and restraint
- Support preventive healthcare, infectious disease control, biosecurity, and shelter medicine practices
- Maintain accurate medical, treatment, surgical, and anesthesia records
- Prepare and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment
- Maintain medical supplies, equipment, and inventory
- Communicate medical and post-operative care instructions to staff and foster caregivers
- Collaborate with veterinarians, external veterinary providers, and the Animal Care team to support patient care
Our Ideal Candidate
- Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) in good standing with the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians (OAVT)
- Minimum 1 year of clinical RVT experience with 3+ years preferred; Experience in shelter medicine, emergency medicine, and/or high-volume spay/neuter experience is considered an asset
- Strong surgical and anesthesia skills, including patient preparation, anesthesia monitoring and recovery
- Confident working independently, prioritizing competing demands, and make sound decisions in a fast-paced shelter medicine environment
- Strong knowledge of animal health, infection prevention and control, and animal welfare
- Comfortable providing medical care to sick, injured, and hospitalized animals with varying levels of care needs
- Skilled in safe, humane, low-stress handling and restraint of a variety of species and temperaments
- Strong communication, organization, and attention to detail
- Comfortable with the physical requirements of the role, including prolonged standing, animal restraint, cleaning, and lifting up to 50 lbs
- Valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license and reliable access to a vehicle
