Summary
ChemEdge Engineering is looking for a Senior Instrumentation Specialist / Engineer to join our instrumentation, automation and controls team. We're seeking someone with deep, hands-on instrumentation expertise and a track record of leading I&C scope on large, complex EPCM projects — from FEED through detailed engineering, procurement support, and commissioning. This is an opportunity for an experienced professional to take a technical and people-leadership role on projects spanning oil sands, refining, midstream, power, and utility systems.
About the Role
As Senior Instrumentation Specialist / Engineer, you will act as a subject matter expert across the full instrumentation discipline, provide technical leadership to project teams, and support project controls, scheduling, and client-facing communication throughout the project lifecycle. You'll work across multiple industries and project scales — from small brownfield modifications to multi-billion-dollar greenfield developments.
Job Responsibilities
- Act as Subject Matter Expert across a broad range of field instruments — control valves, regulators, transmitters (pressure, temperature, level, density, BS&W), flow measurement (custody transfer, multi-phase, solids), and PSV/PRV sizing.
- Lead or support instrumentation scope on EPCM projects, including PFD/P&ID development, control narratives, cause & effect matrices, control system architecture, and control panel/marshalling design.
- Participate in SIL and HAZOP reviews, and contribute to corporate instrumentation specifications, procedures, and standards.
- Provide DCS/control systems expertise (e.g., Honeywell Experion PKS/C200-C300, TPS, PlantScape, or equivalent platforms) and support software/logic development as needed.
- Lead and mentor I&C project teams, manage resourcing, and support recruitment, onboarding, and development of junior engineers.
- Own instrumentation project controls — schedule, budget, resource forecasting, change order tracking, and progress reporting.
- Manage vendor and stakeholder communication, including RFQ/bid packages, technical bid evaluations (TBE), and vendor document review.
- Support project management duties on assigned scopes, including budget ownership and client relationship management.
Qualifications
- P.Eng. designation (or eligibility for registration with APEGA or equivalent provincial association).
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Electrical, Instrumentation, or a related Engineering discipline.
- 15+ years of progressive experience in instrumentation and controls engineering within EPCM/EPC environments.
- Demonstrated experience across upstream, midstream, refining, oil sands/SAGD, gas plants, pipelines, power, or utility systems.
- Applicant must currently legally be able to work in Canada
- Strong working knowledge of DCS platforms (Honeywell preferred) and industrial control systems/PLCs.
- Proven track record leading multidisciplinary or multi-office teams, including hiring, mentoring, and performance management.
- Solid grounding in project controls — schedule development, resource forecasting, earned value, and change management.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work effectively across client, vendor, and internal teams.
- Experience on large-scale ($1M–$4B+) capital projects considered a strong asset.
