Columbia Academy is a growing K-12 independent school located in the heart of downtown Vancouver. We are seeking an experienced, passionate, and highly motivated Head Teacher who will provide academic leadership while also teaching classes. This role is ideal for an educator who enjoys working directly with students while mentoring fellow teachers and helping shape the school's academic excellence.
As a key member of the leadership team, the Head Teacher will support the Principal in maintaining high academic standards, fostering a positive school culture, and ensuring exceptional teaching and learning throughout the school.
Key Responsibilities Academic Leadership
- Support the Principal with the day-to-day academic operations of the school.
- Mentor, coach, and support teachers to continuously improve instructional practices.
- Conduct classroom observations and provide constructive feedback.
- Assist with curriculum planning, implementation, and assessment.
- Monitor student academic performance and coordinate intervention strategies when necessary.
- Help maintain high standards of student behaviour and school culture.
- Coordinate teacher professional development and staff meetings.
- Assist with teacher evaluations and performance reviews.
- Meet with students and parents regarding academic or behavioural concerns.
- Ensure school policies, BC Curriculum requirements, and educational standards are consistently implemented.
- Support school events, competitions, volunteering initiatives, and extracurricular activities.
Teaching Responsibilities
- Teach assigned elementary or secondary school courses.
- Deliver engaging, student-centred lessons aligned with the BC Curriculum.
- Prepare lesson plans, assessments, and student progress reports.
- Build positive relationships with students and parents.
- Model outstanding classroom management and effective teaching practices.
- Demonstrate excellence in instruction and serve as a role model for other teachers.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Education (Master's degree preferred).
- Valid BC Teaching Certificate (or eligibility to obtain one).
- Minimum five years of successful classroom teaching experience.
- Previous leadership experience (Department Head, Grade Coordinator, Head Teacher, Vice Principal, or similar) is preferred.
- Strong understanding of the BC Curriculum.
- Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong classroom management and instructional expertise.
- Passion for mentoring teachers and supporting student success.
- Independent school experience is an asset.
