About the Client:
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for an 80-year-old gentleman living in Etobicoke. He is completely blind and has a colostomy bag, which requires specialized care attention. Originally from Jamaica, he's adjusting to life in Canada and misses the companionship of friends back home. He uses a walker or wheelchair for mobility and would benefit from someone who can help him stay active, engaged, and comfortable in his daily routine. He enjoys listening to music and has a curated playlist that brings him joy.
Responsibilities:
- Provide personal care support including toileting, hygiene assistance, and colostomy bag changes
- Assist with showering and bathing, being mindful of mobility challenges and circulation concerns with his legs
- Help with light meal preparation, reheating meals, and providing reminders around mealtimes
- Support with household tasks including cleaning and laundry
- Guide him safely around the home, using proper techniques for individuals who are blind (allowing him to hold onto you rather than pushing or pulling)
- Maintain consistency with item placement so he can navigate independently
- Assist with physiotherapy exercises as prescribed
- Accompany him on walks for fresh air and exercise
- Provide companionship through conversation, music, and engaging activities
- Occasionally provide transportation support for errands or appointments
What We're Looking For:
- Experience supporting clients who are blind, with understanding of proper guidance techniques
- Comfort and experience with colostomy care
- Patience and a calm, reassuring demeanor
- Cultural sensitivity, ideally familiarity with Jamaican culture
- Ability to make the client feel comfortable and respected
- Strong communication skills with both the client and family
- Reliable, consistent, and takes initiative when needed
- Brings positive energy and genuine companionship
- English speaking
Schedule:
We're looking to start with 2-3 visits per week, with each shift lasting 4-6 hours. Preferred timing is afternoons to early evenings, approximately 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, to support the most active part of his day including walks, exercises, and meal preparation. This is a recurring weekly schedule to ensure consistency and familiarity.
