About the Client:
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for a gentleman living with progressing dementia in West Ridge, Barrie. While he remains oriented to person and place, his reasoning and judgment have become impaired. He's an independent spirit who enjoys watching TV, walking his 9-year-old bulldog-pit mix, and discussing classic Westerns and hockey. Recently, he's been taking long walks during extreme heat without proper precautions, which has raised safety concerns. He attends gym sessions on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and currently receives weekly visits from the Dementia Society on Thursdays. He lives with his daughter, a paramedic who works rotating shifts.
Responsibilities:
- Provide companionship and supervision to ensure safety throughout the day
- Engage in meaningful activities such as puzzles, games, coloring, and conversation about his interests (Westerns, baseball, hockey)
- Accompany him on walks with his dog while keeping outings safe and local
- Offer light meal preparation support including reheating meals and providing reminders
- Assist with medication reminders to maintain his routine
- Provide transportation for errands or appointments as needed
- Monitor for wandering behaviors and redirect appropriately
- Communicate any concerns or changes in behavior to the family
What We're Looking For:
- Experience supporting individuals with dementia, particularly with safety supervision and monitoring
- Calm, patient demeanor with ability to engage someone who may be flirtatious or inappropriate at times
- Genuine interest in building rapport through conversation about classic films, sports, and other topics
- Comfortable with dogs and able to assist with pet-related activities
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
- English-speaking
- Preference for male caregivers or mature female caregivers who can establish appropriate boundaries
Schedule:
Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, approximately 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM (flexible within midday hours). This is a consistent 6-hour weekly commitment over a three-month period, starting mid-July 2026. The family is open to schedule adjustments as the Dementia Society program concludes after 12 weeks.
