Toronto, ON is actively seeking an experienced
Controller to join their team.
Position Summary:
The Controller will be responsible for financial controls, banking oversight, reporting, and compliance across a group of related companies. Reporting directly to ownership and working closely with the finance and accounting team, the Controller will play a key role in maintaining strong financial governance, ensuring effective internal controls, and providing financial insights to support strategic decision-making.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee banking controls and approval processes across multiple related entities.
- Establish, document, and maintain internal controls, approval workflows, and authorization limits for disbursements and transfers.
- Ensure appropriate segregation of duties for cash management, payments, and banking access.
- Monitor banking activity, signing authorities, and account access across all entities.
- Review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements prepared by the finance and accounting team.
- Consolidate and review financial reporting across multiple entities.
- Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, and financial institutions.
- Provide financial analysis, reporting, and recommendations to ownership to support strategic decision-making.
- Support treasury activities, financing arrangements, and intercompany funding.
- Oversee employee benefits administration and related reporting and compliance requirements.
- Ensure compliance with applicable Canadian accounting standards, including ASPE, tax requirements, and regulatory obligations.
- Ensure financial data privacy and security requirements are maintained, including the protection of sensitive financial, banking, and payroll information.
- Support the annual audit and preparation of year-end working papers.
- Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive financial information.
- Perform additional financial projects and ad hoc duties as assigned by ownership.
Qualifications & Skills:
- CPA designation required.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including experience in a senior accounting or Controller-level role.
- Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting standards (ASPE) and tax compliance.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and accounting software.
- Experience with Sage 300 is preferred.
- Knowledge of financial data privacy and security best practices.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- High level of integrity and discretion when handling confidential information.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a small finance team.
- Strong attention to detail, with a focus on accuracy and meeting deadlines.
- Experience in a service, facilities, or multi-entity environment is an asset.
- Fluent in English; bilingual or multilingual skills are an asset.
