Our client is a well-established industrial organization committed to operational excellence, safety, and continuous improvement. Due to continued investment in automation and plant modernization, they are seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to join their Maintenance & Reliability team in Detroit.
This is a hands-on technical role ideal for a Controls Engineer who enjoys designing, supporting, and optimizing automated systems in a fast-paced manufacturing and processing environment.
Reporting to the Maintenance and Reliability Superintendent, you will play a key role in automation initiatives, system reliability, capital projects, and new equipment commissioning.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain automated control systems (manual and automatic modes)
- Develop and integrate Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) for operator control and monitoring
- Establish and maintain Factory Information Systems for real-time operational data
- Integrate standalone equipment into centralized control platforms
- Troubleshoot and optimize PLCs, drives, instrumentation, and industrial networks
- Support commissioning of new equipment and capital projects
- Collaborate closely with operations and maintenance teams to ensure reliability and safety
- Maintain documentation and ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
- Minimum 5 years of experience in industrial controls and automation
- Strong experience with Allen-Bradley ControlLogix PLCs, PowerFlex drives, and HMI platforms (PanelView, Wonderware, Ignition)
- Experience with SCADA systems, networking, and Windows/VMware infrastructure
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
- Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration abilities
- Flexibility to support projects and operational needs outside standard hours
Preferred Qualifications
- CMMS experience
- Ability to support both first and third shift when required
- Knowledge of MSHA regulations
- Familiarity with mining methods and related equipment
- Experience with mine ventilation, materials handling/processing systems, and/or shaft maintenance
