Position Overview:
We are seeking a Planning Engineer to join our Distribution Engineering Department. Under the direction of the Planning Team
Lead, you are responsible for initiating and performing planning studies on distribution systems and substations, including system
analysis and preparation of planning reports with feasible options and/or recommendations to continue adequate system capacity
and operation within established criteria.
Responsibilities:
- Identify the need for and initiate planning studies for distribution substations and feeders ensuring the continued adequacy of
the system considering safety, feasibility, economics, power flow, loss
- evaluation, reactive power requirements and system reliability. Prepare technical and economic engineering reports complete
with options and/or recommendations for system improvements.
- Working with Asset Lifecycle Management Department to conduct planning studies to address distribution asset and
infrastructure concerns, and provide proposals for the redevelopment of supply to address their long-term needs. Prepare
technical documents and presentations to deliver study results.
- Consult with customer service representatives on major customer load additions. Ensure that system considerations are
included in supply decisions.
- Initiate the preparation of Capital Budget Single Line diagrams for system improvements. When required, make presentations
to the Concept Review Team.
- Provide information, assistance, and advice to other staff, consultants, and manufacturers on issues involving distribution
facilities.
- Train and mentor junior staff, including Engineers-in-Training and students, performing distribution planning studies.
- Maintain contact with the System Control and Operations & Maintenance Departments with respect to operating conditions
and facility requirements.
- Work closely with the Protection and Automation Engineer to develop new advanced distribution automation strategies.
Qualifications:
- Graduate in Electrical Engineering from a University of recognized standing with a minimum of six years of related experience
that includes one year of experience in electrical capacity planning or electrical Distribution.
- Professional member in good standing with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (or willingness and ability to attain within a
specified amount of time).
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the electrical distribution system, safety rules and application of the
Distribution Standards.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and control activities relative to Planning responsibilities.
- Good understanding of engineering economic principles.
- Good understanding of 66kV and below distribution standards would be an asset.
