About Dialist
Dialist is building the modern infrastructure for the luxury watch industry: a mobile wholesale network for vetted dealers and a flagship Marketplace backed by both Canada & USA's most trusted sellers, in-house acquisition, consignment, and authentication services.
We are a small, self-funded team with services live in production. You will be the primary frontend developer on the web product.
Must Have
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent (a related degree, or equivalent demonstrated professional experience)
- 3+ years of professional experience building production web applications
- React and Next.js (App Router) with demonstrable production experience
- TypeScript and JavaScript (strong command of both; TypeScript is our standard)
- Node.js / ExpressJS with the ability to build and debug server-side code, not just consume APIs
- REST API design, development, and integration
- NoSQL/document database experience (MongoDB preferred), including schema design, indexing, and query optimization
- Working knowledge of AWS, including S3, EC2, and CloudFront/CDN usage in production applications
- Skilled AI-assisted development. You use tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot to accelerate development while maintaining complete ownership of the code you ship. We are not looking for developers who cannot explain or debug AI-generated code.
- Strong engineering discipline and clean coding practices, including:
- Meaningful naming
- Small, focused functions and components
- Separation of concerns
- DRY principles without unnecessary abstraction
- Consistent adherence to project conventions (linting, formatting, folder structure, typed interfaces)
- Pull requests that are easy to review
- Strong understanding of core computer science and web fundamentals, including:
- WebSockets vs. Server-Sent Events vs. polling
- Authentication concepts (JWTs vs. session cookies, token storage, refresh flows, CSRF/XSS considerations)
- HTTP fundamentals (status codes, caching, CORS, request lifecycle)
- Data structures, asynchronous programming, concurrency basics, and race conditions
- Experience using Git in a collaborative workflow (GitHub, branches, pull requests, and code reviews)
Nice to Have
- Experience integrating payment platforms such as Stripe, Adyen, Finix, or similar (checkout, payouts, disputes, idempotency)
- Experience with authentication providers such as Clerk, Auth0, or similar
- Experience integrating real-time messaging platforms such as GetStream
- Experience with identity verification/KYC providers such as Persona
- Experience with faceted search, full-text search, or search engineering
- Experience building e-commerce or marketplace products
- Broader AWS experience, including IAM, deployment automation, and monitoring
- Testing experience with Jest, Vitest, React Testing Library, and/or Playwright
- CI/CD experience using GitHub Actions, Vercel, or similar
- Familiarity with React Native (helpful but not required)
- Awareness of WCAG accessibility best practices
Responsibilities
- Design, build, test, and debug features across the Marketplace web application, including product pages, listings, search, checkout, seller tools, and account management
- Integrate front-end applications with REST APIs developed alongside our backend engineer
- Build and maintain real-time functionality, including messaging, live inventory, and notification updates using WebSockets and event-driven architectures
- Implement polished user interfaces directly from Figma designs with pixel-level attention to detail suitable for a luxury brand
- Optimize performance through caching strategies, pagination, image optimization, CDN configuration, and scalable application architecture
- Work with AWS services including S3, EC2, and CloudFront for storage, deployment, and content delivery
- Support CI/CD pipelines and participate in production releases, incident investigations, and troubleshooting
- Write unit and integration tests for critical application flows such as authentication, checkout, and payments
- Maintain and improve coding standards by following established project conventions, contributing clean code, and participating in thoughtful code reviews
- Use AI-assisted development tools responsibly to accelerate delivery while maintaining security, code quality, and complete ownership of your work
- Collaborate closely with the CTO, backend engineer, designers, and operations team in a fast-paced startup environment
- Document the systems and features you build and share knowledge with the rest of the team
- Provide post-release support for shipped features
Evaluation Process
Candidates will be evaluated on both technical ability and product judgment.
The interview process includes:
- A technical interview covering the fundamentals listed above. Expect to explain core CS concepts in your own words.
- A practical coding exercise based on a realistic portion of our technology stack.
- Discussion of how you use AI-assisted development tools in your workflow. We will assess whether you fully understand and can confidently explain the code you produce.
- Code quality is evaluated throughout the hiring process. We care not only that your solution works, but that it is well-structured, readable, and maintainable.
