IT Support Technician
Hiring: Permanent, part-time (20-25 hours/week), with a flexible schedule during office hours. In-office position in Victoria BC. Monday-Friday.
About Us:
Biologica is a growing family- owned and operated Canadian aquatic biomonitoring company, located in Victoria, BC. We are a close-knit team of biologists and technicians whose primary focus is the identification of organisms (mainly invertebrates and algae) collected from a variety of aquatic habitats (freshwater and marine) in support of environmental monitoring initiatives. We work with a remote contracted IT service provider with a managed service plan. Our team is friendly, collaborative, and professional.
About the Role:
Biologica Environmental Services is seeking a proactive and detail-oriented IT Support Technician to serve as the primary on-site point of contact for our IT needs. This role provides hands-on technical support to laboratory and office staff and works closely with our contracted IT service provider supporting Microsoft 365, servers, firewalls, and cybersecurity.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys solving problems, supporting users with varying levels of technical expertise, contributing to IT strategy and continuous improvement in a small business and someone looking for flexible, part-time schedule with consistent hours.
Key Responsibilities:
On-Site IT Support
· Provide day-to-day technical support for office and laboratory staff.
· Set up, configure, and maintain workstations, laptops, monitors, and peripherals.
· Install and troubleshoot printers, scanners, and network-connected devices.
· Support Microsoft 365 applications including Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, and OneDrive.
· Troubleshoot basic issues with label printers, barcode scanners, balances, and other laboratory peripherals.
IT Coordination & Vendor Liaison
· Act as the on-site liaison with the contracted IT service provider.
· Escalate issues as needed and assist with on-site implementation of fixes and upgrades.
· Coordinate support related to Microsoft 365 accounts, servers, networking, firewalls, and security.
· Review and confirm invoices from the contracted IT provider.
Laboratory Systems & Equipment Support
· Assist with setup and basic troubleshooting of computers connected to microscopes and imaging systems.
· Learn and support laboratory-specific software used for imaging, analysis, and data management.
· Work closely with laboratory staff to understand workflows and minimize technical disruptions.
· Coordinate with vendors or specialists for advanced microscope or software support.
Documentation & Continuous Improvement
· Maintain IT documentation, asset inventory, and basic procedures.
· Support onboarding of new staff by preparing equipment and providing IT orientation.
· Assist with delivering security awareness training to staff.
Required Skills and Abilities:
· Diploma or certificate in Information Technology, Computer Systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience would be considered an asset.
Experience:
· 0-2 years of experience in IT support or a related role.
· Experience supporting Microsoft 365 in a Windows-based environment.
· Experience setting up and troubleshooting workstations, printers, considered an asset.
· Understanding of networking concepts and IT security best practices, considered an asset.

Additional Requirements:
· Legally eligible to work in Canada.
· Comfortable working primarily on-site in a laboratory and office environment.
· Able to lift up to 25 pounds.
· Occasional availability outside regular hours for critical issues or system upgrades.
