CORE NETWORK ENGINEER
About telMAX Inc.:
Based in York Region, telMAX is a private equity-backed all fibre digital infrastructure platform that provides a 21st century alternative to traditional telecom networks. Recognized for four consecutive years as Canada’s Fastest ISP with an industry-leading net promoter score of over fifty, telMAX is continuing its rapid growth plan to bring its all-fibre network to residential and business customers across Southern Ontario.
Your Position & How You Will Contribute:
Reporting to the Director, Network and Security, the Core Network Engineer is the hands-on owner of our core: routing, the QFX/MX/ACX fabric, and the IPAM/DHCP/DNS services everything else depends on. This is a senior individual-contributor role on a small, capable team — you lead through the work, not through direct reports.
This role is built for someone who is production-minded and thrives with direct ownership. You'll be hands-on with the config, close to the infrastructure, and able to learn our as-built network quickly and start making real improvements within your first three months. We'll give you the context, the access, and the air cover — we're looking for the experience and initiative to use them. As part of a growing company, you'll have real opportunities to expand your expertise and grow your career alongside the network.
Responsibilities & Key Duties:
Core Network Ownership
-
Take ownership of the as-deployed core: routing, the edge and the QFX/MX/ACX fabric.
-
Add sites and capacity, optimize existing infrastructure, and keep resiliency ahead of growth.
-
Bootstrap new QFX5120 deployments from a known-good template and bring them online cleanly.
Routing and Fabric
-
Own and Optimize eBGP toward transit and peers, and iBGP/EVPN-XLAN inside the fabric.
-
Maintain dual-stack IPv4/IPv6 operations, including full tables, communities, and routing policy.
-
Ensure routing configuration is well understood, documented and defensible.
Core Services
-
Own IPAM, DHCP, and DNS as first-class production services
-
Ensure these services are stable, well documented, and managed with the same rigour as core routing infrastructure
Automation & Tooling
-
Template, script, and automate repetitive work including: config generation and validation
-
Build and maintain tools that keep a team efficient and consistent
Maintenance & Incident Response
-
Plan and execute production maintenance with complete MOPs and rollback procedures
-
Drive incident response with ownership and accountability, proactively before escalation is required
-
Create and maintain accurate as-builts and methods-of-procedures, and contribute to the accuracy of team documentation
What You Bring:
-
Ownership Mindset: You take responsibility for the network end-to-end. When you see something wrong, you fix it or raise it — and you see open problems as yours until they're resolved.
-
Full-Stack Network Owner: You've worn multiple hats and liked it. You're comfortable owning routing, switching, and core services at once, and you don't need a large team or a long runway to be useful.
-
Calm Under Fire: You're at your best when the network is at its worst. That steadiness is the standard we build the team around.
-
Articulate: You translate technical reality to the business and business need back into the network. You document as you go so the next person inherits clarity, not archaeology.
-
Collaborative and Team-Oriented: Small team, large surface. You contribute frequently, ask good questions, presume positive intent, and bring others along. We win together — and that means showing up for your teammates as much as for the network.
-
Detail-Oriented and Resourceful: Strong attention to detail with a high level of accuracy. You are methodical in how you approach problems and thorough in how you close
Experience:
-
Hands-on experience operating a service-provider or carrier-grade IP network in Canada.
-
Hands-on eBGP and iBGP experience, dual-stack, including EVPN-VXLAN fabric operations.
-
Practical ownership of IPAM, DHCP, and DNS in production (e.g., Infoblox, BIND, Kea, or equivalents).
-
Scripting and config automation (Python, Ansible, or similar).
-
Juniper (MX / ACX / QFX) and Junos fluency is required.
-
JNCIS-SP or higher is an asset. CCNP or higher is considered with Juniper transferability.
-
Proven track record of delivering in a small-team environment with direct ownership.
Education:
-
Bachelors degree or diploma in Computer Science, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Networking/Security, or equivalent in related fields.
