Job Title: Controls Engineer / PLC Programmer
Electrical Panel Design & Automation Programming | 5–10 Years Experience
Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced Controls Engineer / PLC Programmer to join our growing automation engineering team. This role owns the electrical design of custom automation systems end-to-end — from control panel design, component selection, and bill of materials (BOM) generation through electrical schematic creation, PLC and robot/cobot programming, panel build oversight, and on-site commissioning. You will work on custom equipment such as assembly line automation, PLC-controlled machinery, industrial robots, machine vision systems, and motion control for customers across a variety of industries.
Key Responsibilities
Electrical Design
· Design electrical control panels and generate panel layouts using electrical CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, SOLIDWORKS Electrical).
· Create electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and one-line diagrams for custom automation equipment.
· Generate and maintain the bill of materials (BOM) for all electrical components.
· Select electrical components (PLCs, drives, sensors, safety devices, etc.) to meet system requirements and budget.
Programming & Integration
· Program PLCs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Omron, Mitsubishi, or equivalent) for custom machine control.
· Program and configure industrial robots/cobots for automated processes.
· Configure and program HMIs, VFDs, and servo drives.
· Integrate machine vision systems and industrial networks (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, Modbus, or similar).
Build, Commissioning & Support
· Oversee or perform wiring and assembly of control panels and custom automation equipment.
· Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts produced by self or others.
· Install, troubleshoot, test, and commission PLC-controlled machinery.
· Perform machine startup, FAT, SAT, and on-site commissioning.
· Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software engineering teams throughout the project lifecycle.
· Ensure compliance with CSA electrical codes and machine safety standards.
· Prepare electrical documentation and commissioning reports.
· Travel occasionally for customer installations and technical support.
Required Qualifications
· 5–10 years of experience in industrial automation or machine building, including electrical panel design.
· Proven experience programming PLCs (not just troubleshooting) — Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Omron, Mitsubishi, or equivalent.
· Experience programming or integrating industrial robots/cobots.
· Experience with electrical CAD/schematic design software (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, SOLIDWORKS Electrical).
· Experience generating BOMs and specifying electrical components for custom machinery.
· Strong ability to read and produce electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings.
· Experience wiring industrial control panels.
· Experience commissioning automated machinery.
· Excellent troubleshooting and communication skills.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
· Industrial Electrician (442A / 309A) license.
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience with machine vision systems.
· HMI programming experience beyond basic configuration.
· Knowledge of servo motion control and machine safety systems (risk assessments, safety-rated devices).
· Experience across multiple PLC/robot platforms.
· Willingness to travel occasionally.
What We Offer
· Competitive salary and benefits — [$80,000–$110,000]
· Career growth opportunities
· Ownership of design work on cutting-edge robotics and industrial automation projects
· Supportive and collaborative engineering team
· Stable, full-time position
