YOUTH WORKER [Part-time/Casual/On-call]
St. Leonard’s is seeking a Youth Worker in our youth open detention, open custody facility. The primary responsibility of the Youth Worker is to provide constant care and supervision for Youth at St. Leonard’s Community Support, Prevention and Residential Services (SLCSPRS) AKA St. Leonard's Hastings. Prince Edward. In childhood and adolescence there are periods of rapid growth, which requires guidance in a safe and supportive environment. Recognition and understanding of these changes are paramount to the role of a Youth Worker. It is important for the Youth Worker to build a rapport with the youth, this will allow the Youth Worker the opportunity to support and assist the needs of the youth. Daily life at St. Leonard’s CSPRS is organized in such a manner as to promote positive changes in behaviour of the youth through structured daily programming.

St. Leonard’s HPE provides a broad spectrum of care including early intervention, youth justice services, and housing supports within Hastings and Prince Edward Counties. We aspire to assist and enable youth to build life skills, increase their understanding and empathy, and accountability. Also, to restore their self-confidence and self-worth though effective, responsive, and accessible programs. Our staff work to support youth development to help them grow into the best versions of themselves. Our key programs include Youthreach, Extrajudicial Measures, Extrajudicial Sanctions, Youth Justice Committee, Attendance Centre, Reintegration Support, Detention and Custody services (males aged 12-17 years), Supported Independent Living, and Youth Emergency Housing.
Key Responsibilities
- Continually assess and fulfill youth needs, including but not limited to, basic needs, legal, physical and mental health, educational, religious, etc. from intake to release
- Create and maintain a safe, clean, and orderly living environment
- Ensure youth follow daily schedules for programming, cleaning, recreation, and other responsibilities
- Deliver life skills programs for youth that complement case management plans
- Complete all case notes/required documentation accurately and on time
-Basic knowledge of developmental needs (intellectual, emotional, physical, and social) of Young Persons in care
-Experience with and competence in the realm of group work
-Appreciation for the Young Persons’ need for stability and consistent care
-Demonstrated skills in direct relations to the function/task at hand
-Ability to relate appropriately to Young Persons as well as to the families of everyone
-Ability to write legible, clear, and concise reports
-Working knowledge of computers/applications (Office 365/ Excel)
-Demonstrate maturity and reliability and professionalism at all times
Qualifications
-Child and Youth Worker/Corrections Diploma or a Bachelor of Arts in a related field, with related work experience.
-Certification in CPR and First Aid are mandatory
- Broad Sector Check mandatory; if not available, VSS acceptable at hire
-Valid Class G Driver’s License
-Training in Containments mandatory (UMAB)
-Updated Immunization record and “letter of fitness” to work rotating shifts
- MUST be available to work weekends, evenings and overnights
Starting Wage
- $25.00/hour with credentials
- $20.00/hour for college/university enrolled student
