V.I.L. Landscaping is looking for a creative, practical and highly organized Landscape Designer & Field Quality Coordinator.
This is not a desk-only design position. You will help create landscape and planting plans, visit active projects, coordinate with crews and suppliers, and make sure the finished work follows the design and meets our quality standards.
The right person enjoys design and horticulture but is also comfortable driving a pickup truck, walking construction sites, coordinating materials and solving practical problems.
You will help connect the client’s vision with the people responsible for building it.
What You’ll DoLandscape design
- Create landscape concepts, plans and client presentation materials.
- Prepare planting plans and recommend suitable plants.
- Use landscape design software to produce clear and accurate designs.
- Visit properties to take measurements, photographs and site notes.
- Consider grading, drainage, construction access and maintenance requirements.
- Revise designs based on client feedback, site conditions and budget.
- Provide project managers and crews with clear plans and layouts.
- Help ensure designs are attractive, practical and ready to build.
Quality control
- Visit active and recently completed projects.
- Compare installed work with approved designs and company standards.
- Review plant layouts and confirm proper placement.
- Identify deficiencies before they become larger problems.
- Take photographs and document required corrections.
- Communicate deficiencies clearly to project managers and crews.
- Follow up until corrections are completed.
- Assist with final inspections and project closeouts.
Field and supplier coordination
- Build positive relationships with nurseries and other suppliers.
- Confirm plant, material and product availability.
- Help coordinate orders, pickups and deliveries.
- Safely drive a company pickup truck.
- Transport plants, samples, tools and small materials when required.
- Help crews understand planting layouts and design details.
- Support planting and enhancement work when needed.
- Learn to operate small equipment when appropriate.
Mechanical skills are an asset
Candidates with mechanical ability may also help with minor vehicle and equipment maintenance, including:
- Oil and filter changes
- Basic brake work
- Minor equipment repairs
- Replacing damaged hydraulic hoses
- Identifying problems that require an outside mechanic
Mechanical experience is helpful but is not required for a strong design and horticulture candidate.
What We’re Looking For
- Experience or education in landscape design, horticulture or a related field.
- Experience using landscape design software.
- Understanding of plants suitable for Southern Ontario.
- Strong attention to detail and visual judgment.
- Ability to recognize design, planting and construction deficiencies.
- Comfortable working in both office and field environments.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- Organized, dependable and able to follow tasks through to completion.
- Ability to work independently and solve practical problems.
- Valid G driver’s licence.
- Comfortable driving a pickup truck and visiting construction sites.
- Willingness to learn equipment operation and field processes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in landscape design, horticulture, landscape architecture or a related field.
- Experience designing residential landscapes.
- Experience creating planting plans.
- Knowledge of landscape construction methods.
- Experience with 2D or 3D design software.
- Experience coordinating with nurseries and suppliers.
- Experience inspecting landscape or construction projects.
- Basic mechanical or equipment-maintenance ability.
