Role Purpose Reporting to the Director of Conservation, the Senior Conservation Coordinator – Field Operations provides operational leadership, coordination, and system oversight for field-based Resource Conservation activities across the Meewasin Valley jurisdiction. This position is responsible for translating strategic program objectives, Site Resource Management Plans, and valley-wide conservation strategies into effective field operations. The role governs operational workflows, disturbance-based management implementation, equipment systems, deployment logistics, and field safety alignment. The incumbent functions as the primary operational authority for field delivery systems, ensuring conservation actions are implemented safely, efficiently, and consistently. The role works closely with the Senior Coordinator – Ecological Monitoring & Assessment, Resource Management Technicians, and GIS & Data Management personnel to ensure alignment between ecological objectives and operational realities. This is a field-intensive leadership position requiring sustained outdoor operational involvement.
Duties
1. Field Operations & Integrated Land Management
- Lead planning, coordination, and execution of field-based conservation activities
- Coordinate implementation of Site Resource Management Plans and annual workplans
- Lead operational delivery of prescribed fire, targeted grazing, ecological restoration activities, and integrated invasive species management
- Maintain operational continuity across sites and projects Identify and respond to emerging operational or ecological issues
2. Implementation of Valley-Wide Strategies -
- Lead operational implementation of valley-wide conservation and resource management strategies
- Translate strategic objectives into annual workplans and field programs
- Ensure consistency of implementation across management units
3. Annual Work Planning & Reporting
- Lead development and coordination of annual Conservation field workplans
- Track, document, and report on implementation progress and constraints
- Lead preparation of Annual Site Resource Management Plan Implementation Reports
- Identify operational barriers, risks, and adaptive needs
- Provide structured feedback to Monitoring & Assessment
4. Equipment & Operational Systems Governance
- Oversee lifecycle management of field equipment, tools, and vehicles
- Establish and maintain equipment tracking and readiness systems
- Identify infrastructure and equipment needs
- Develop and improve operational workflows and efficiencies
5. Field Safety & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with organizational safety policies and field protocols
- Reinforce safe work practices and hazard mitigation strategies
- Support risk-aware operational decision-making
- Participate in prescribed fire operations
6. Staff & Student Coordination
- Provide functional supervision and coordination of Resource Conservation Technicians
- Coordinate day-to-day field activities involving seasonal staff and students
- Provide operational mentorship and guidance in field settings
Role Requirements
The ideal candidate will have:
- Degree or diploma in resource management, ecology, biology, agriculture, environmental science, or a related discipline (required).
- Professional designation (e.g., PAg, PBio, or equivalent), or eligibility to obtain designation (required).
- Valid Industrial Herbicide Applicator License (required).
- Minimum of 5+ years of progressively responsible experience in applied conservation, land management, field operations, and ecological program delivery
- Strong operational leadership and coordination skills.
- Proven ability to Plan, organize, and adapt field activities in dynamic and changing environments. manage field logistics effectively, apply systems thinking to operational challenges
- Practical understanding of equipment, infrastructure, and resource requirements in field-based work, consistent application of safety-conscious, risk-aware decision-making.
- Applied understanding of disturbance-based management systems and their role in achieving ecological and conservation objectives.
- Ability and willingness to perform sustained outdoor field work in all seasons.
- Participation in prescribed fire operations, including required training.
- Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check prior to appointment.
Pay: $57,496.00-$69,866.00 per year
