We're seeking a compassionate, reliable caregiver to support an elderly couple in their Peterborough home. The husband is high-functioning with Alzheimer's (diagnosed 10 years ago) and recently recovered from hip replacement surgery following a fall in April. He uses a walker or wheelchair for mobility. The wife is his primary caregiver and is experiencing caregiver burnout. Their adult daughter coordinates care remotely from PEI and visits every couple of months to manage household affairs.
About the Clients: The husband attends a day program (the clubhouse) three days per week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday). He requires supervision for safety due to cognitive needs, mobility assistance with his walker/wheelchair, medication reminders, and help with bathing and personal care. The wife needs respite breaks to run errands, attend appointments, and maintain her own wellbeing. Both value staying in their home and maintaining their independence as long as possible.
Responsibilities:
- Provide supervision and companionship to ensure safety while the wife is out
- Assist with mobility support using walker or wheelchair
- Help with bathing and personal care tasks
- Provide medication reminders and assistance
- Light tidying and household maintenance
- Respect their routines and independence
- Communicate clearly with family about any concerns or changes
What We're Looking For:
- Experience with Alzheimer's/dementia care and cognitive support
- Comfortable assisting with walker and wheelchair transfers
- Skilled in personal care including bathing support
- Patient, calm demeanor with positive energy
- Reliable and consistent with strong communication skills
- Takes initiative when needed while respecting client independence
- English speaking
- Experience caring for multiple clients simultaneously is an asset
Schedule: Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday for 2-hour shifts during daytime hours. Consistent timing preferred to establish routine. Occasional overnight respite care may be requested in the future to allow the wife extended breaks. Government-funded care currently in place will be ending soon, and this position will provide seamless transition to private care. Start date flexible based on when current services conclude (anticipated late summer).
This is a meaningful opportunity to help a devoted couple remain in their home while providing essential respite to a dedicated spouse and caregiver.
