Position Overview
UP Vertical Farms, a pioneering leader in sustainable vertical farming and agri-technology, is seeking a organized, proactive, detail-oriented and analytical Financial Controller to support the organization’s financial operations and reporting functions. This permanent, on-site full-time salary role is critical to ensuring accurate financial records, regulatory compliance, and effective financial controls across the organization.
The Financial Controller is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing financial statements, overseeing accounts payable and receivable, processing payroll, payroll and benefits reconciliation, managing statutory remittances, and ensuring compliance with applicable federal and provincial legislation. The role supports internal controls, financial audits, and reporting requirements related to grants, SR&ED claims, and other government programs.
This position reports to the Owners and works closely with department managers to support budgeting, financial reporting, cost control, and compliance functions. Work hours are primarily scheduled during regular daytime business hours, with occasional flexibility required in evenings or weekends to meet reporting deadlines, audits, or operational needs.
Performance is evaluated by the Owners based on accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting, compliance with statutory obligations, quality of documentation, internal control adherence, and contribution to organizational financial integrity and operational effectiveness.
Duties and Responsibilities
Include but are not limited to:
- 1. Oversee full-cycle accounting: AP/AR, payroll, general ledger, month-end/year-end close, and multi-entity bookkeeping.
- Prepare financial statements, trial balances, budgets, forecasts, KPIs, and management reports.
- Maintain accurate balance sheet, inventory, and fixed asset accounts.
- Build dashboards for production, sales, and retail/wholesale performance.
- Ensure timely tax filings and regulatory compliance (GST/HST, payroll, corporate tax).
- Manage vendor invoices, reconciliations, and collections.
- Monitor staff and contractor expenses, fuel cards, per diems, and benefit invoices.
- Implement and maintain payment and receivable tracking systems.
- Process and reconcile payroll, deductions, benefits, severance, and final pay.
- Prepare year-end reporting (T4/T4A/RL-1/W-2/W-3) and ROEs.
- Ensure compliance with CRA, IRS, BC Employment Standards Act, and privacy requirements.
- Prepare and file GST/PST, corporate taxes, and other provincial/federal filings.
- Support grant, subsidy, and SR&ED reporting.
- Assist with internal/external audits and maintain organized, audit-ready records.
- Strengthen internal controls and ensure compliance with company policies.
- Monitor production costs, inventory valuation, capital expenditures, and variances.
- Provide financial analysis for pricing, budgeting, and operational decisions.
- Negotiate supplier/service contracts and support cost efficiency initiatives.
- Maintain ERP/accounting software accuracy and confidentiality.
- Identify and implement process improvements and workflow efficiencies.
- Manage expense tracking, reimbursements, and interdepartmental reporting.
- Support cross-functional projects, mentoring of accounting team, and day-to-day financial operations.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
- CPA, CMA, or CGA designation from BC
- Bachelor's in Accounting or related field.
- 10+ years of experience in accounting, payroll, and benefits.
- Knowledge of ASPE, Income Tax Act, Excise Tax Act, BC Employment Standards Act, PIPA.
- Experience with ADP Workforce Now, ICICLE, QuickBooks Online, or similar ERP systems.
- Legal eligibility to work in Canada;
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license; advanced Excel skills.
- Experience with grants, SR&ED, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
Skills and Abilities

- Excellent communication and confidentiality in handling financial information.
- Knowledge of manufacturing accounting and inventory management preferred.

Compensation and Benefits:
- Salary range: $120,000-$130,000 per year, commensurate with experience.

Work schedule:
- Full-time: Monday-Fridays
- Mornings, Days, evenings shifts or weekend shifts based on operational requirements.
- Shift times may vary depending on business requirements.
