Candidates currently living in South West Ontario will be given priority. Candidates outside of Canada will not be considered.
Role Description
The Junior Lawyer will support the firm’s Criminal Defence and Refugee Law practice by assisting with court appearances, legal research, drafting legal documents, and preparing case files under supervision.
Day-to-day responsibilities include reviewing disclosure, summarising evidence, drafting pleadings and submissions, and helping prepare for hearings and trials.
The Junior Lawyer will collaborate closely with senior counsel to develop legal strategies and ensure timely, high-quality work product. This is a part-time, on-site role based in Chatham-Kent, ON.
Qualifications
- Licensed to practice Law in the Province of Ontario. (Called to the Bar)
- Candidate should have an interest in criminal law and a strong grasp of the rules of evidence.
- Strong legal research and writing skills, including the ability to analyse case law, legislation, and legal commentary.
- Competence in drafting legal documents such as affidavits, motions, submissions, and client correspondence.
- Effective client communication skills, with the ability to listen, explain legal concepts clearly, and show empathy in sensitive matters.
- Solid organisational and time-management abilities to handle multiple files, meet deadlines, and maintain detailed, accurate records.
- Knowledge or coursework in Criminal Law and Refugee/Immigration Law, with a genuine interest in advocacy and access to justice.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a small firm environment, take direction, and exercise sound judgement and professionalism.
- Law degree (LL.B., J.D., or equivalent) and eligibility to practice or article in Ontario; membership or eligibility with the Law Society of Ontario is an asset.
- Experience in a litigation, criminal defence, or refugee/immigration setting (clinics, internships, or placements) is considered an advantage.
- High ethical standards, respect for confidentiality, and commitment to serving diverse communities with cultural sensitivity.
Pay: From $60,000.00 per year
