Overview
The Teaching Assistant supports the Lead Instructor in providing a positive, consistent, and engaging learning environment for Massage Therapy students.
The Teaching Assistant works alongside the Lead Instructor to support practical skill development, reinforce classroom learning, provide appropriate feedback, and help students develop the knowledge, confidence, professionalism, and clinical skills required throughout the program.
The Teaching Assistant works within the established HWCC curriculum, policies, evaluation standards, and direction provided by the Lead Instructor.
Duties and Responsibilities
Student and Classroom Support
- Support the Lead Instructor with the delivery of classroom and practical learning activities.
- Assist students during practical skill development and provide guidance within the established curriculum and the student's current scope of learning.
- Circulate throughout the classroom during practical activities to observe students, answer questions, and provide appropriate feedback.
- Reinforce safe treatment practices, proper body mechanics, draping, communication, consent, assessment, treatment techniques, and professional conduct as appropriate to the students' level of training.
- Help identify students who may require additional support and communicate concerns to the Lead Instructor.
- Encourage student participation while maintaining a positive, respectful, and professional learning environment.
- Support students in developing independence and clinical reasoning rather than providing answers or completing work for them.
Instructional Support
- Review required readings, module PowerPoints, study guides, Instructor Guides, and other assigned materials prior to class.
- Be familiar with the learning objectives and practical skills being taught in each assigned module.
- Assist with practical demonstrations when requested by the Lead Instructor.
- Reinforce techniques and concepts using HWCC approved curriculum, textbooks, and resources.
- Ensure information provided to students is consistent with the curriculum and direction of the Lead Instructor.
- Direct questions regarding exams, academic policies, accommodations, appeals, or other matters outside the Teaching Assistant role to the appropriate Lead Instructor or department.
- Support the Lead Instructor with classroom setup, practical activities, transitions, and other reasonable classroom needs.
Evaluation and Feedback
- Provide students with constructive feedback that is consistent with program expectations and standardized evaluation methods.
- Assist with student evaluations or practical assessments when assigned and appropriately trained.
- Follow HWCC evaluation criteria and rubrics without altering standards or creating separate evaluation requirements.
- Maintain student confidentiality when discussing academic performance, concerns, or progress.
Communication and Professional Conduct
- Maintain professional and respectful communication with students, faculty, staff, and administration.
- Respond to student communication within 24 hours when responsible for responding.
- Respond to or acknowledge communication from faculty and Home Office within 72 hours.
- Communicate student concerns, classroom incidents, safety concerns, or interpersonal issues to the Lead Instructor and appropriate department.
- Record and submit required documentation regarding classroom safety or interpersonal incidents.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with students at all times.
- Follow all HWCC policies, procedures, Faculty Success Guide requirements, and campus expectations.
- Other duties related to classroom and student support as assigned.
Qualifications
- Graduate of a recognized Massage Therapy program.
- Must meet applicable provincial requirements for the Teaching Assistant role.
- Must be in good standing with the applicable regulatory body or professional association where required.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Strong practical Massage Therapy knowledge and skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to provide constructive feedback and support students at different stages of learning.
- Ability to work collaboratively with Lead Instructors and other faculty members.
- Demonstrates professionalism, reliability, ethical conduct, and appropriate professional boundaries.
- Comfortable supporting students in both theoretical and hands on learning environments.
- Previous teaching, mentoring, tutoring, or leadership experience is considered an asset.
Professional Development
Teaching Assistants are expected to participate in required HWCC faculty development and training.
This includes completion of assigned Faculty Development Series modules and any additional training required for curriculum delivery, student evaluation, safety, academic policies, or other areas related to the Teaching Assistant role.
Working Conditions
This is a casual / contract position with hours based on scheduled classroom needs and program delivery.
Teaching Assistants may be scheduled for daytime, evening, or weekend classes depending on the campus and cohort schedule.
Preparation required to effectively support the assigned class is considered part of the role. Additional billable hours outside of the agreed contract must receive prior approval.
Teaching Assistants may be required to stand for extended periods, demonstrate Massage Therapy techniques, assist with classroom setup, and participate actively in practical classroom activities.
Physical Requirements
Ability to safely perform and demonstrate Massage Therapy techniques and practical skills associated with the curriculum.
Ability to occasionally move or lift classroom equipment and supplies up to 20 pounds.
