JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible to the Director of Care and working under the general supervision of a Registered nurse following the competency guidelines within the standards of practice as outlined by the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals (BCCNP) and current legislative scope of practice.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Training;
Graduation from a recognized program for practical nurses or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Current full practicing licensure with the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals (BCCNP):
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides leadership in day-to-day operations:
- Supervises staff and assigns work
- Utilizes knowledge and clinical expertise in gerentological nursing by being a clinical resource to the care team and by providing support to staff on care-planning, assessment, skills development, and adherence to policies.
- Assists in monitoring and coaching safe work practices
- Coordinates resident care delivery with a person-centered philosophy:
- Ensures completion of staff assignments
- Provides support to staff in prioritizing and planning care delivery
- Coordinates admissions and transfers
- Contributes to the development and revision of standards, policies, and procedures that impact resident care
- Provides leadership:
- Promotes a team approach and collaborative work environment
- Mentors leadership skills in others
- Serves as a professional role model
- Mediates, negotiates, and facilitates problem-solving as issues arise
- Focuses on Quality of care and Risk management:
- Promotes and facilitates a safe environment for residents and staff
- Promotes dementia – sensitive and person –centered philosophy of care
- Addresses and documents risks and quality issues as they arise
- Follows up and contributes to resolution of risk management issues
- Participates in implementing and evaluating quality improvement initiatives
- Follows Nursing Standards of Practice, Accreditation standards, and GVL policies and procedures.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
A. Education , Training and Experience
· Current practicing registration with the College of Registered Nurses of BC
· Experience with dementia care and palliative care
· 1-5 years recent related experience
· Current CPR Level 1
· Computer skills including RAI competency
· Ability to provide nursing care to residents and families in a professional manner consistent with policies, procedures, standards, and regulations in the following areas:
o Complete incident reports as required
o Assessment- MDS, cognitive, physical, functional, and psychological
o Effective communication skills oral, written, and computer-based
o Effective interpersonal skills
o Ability to monitor and guide care provided by care aides
o Knowledge of policies, procedures, standards and ability to access them
o Knowledge of principles of palliative care
o Knowledge of principles of dementia sensitive care
o Current pain management theories
o Strong leadership skills
o Ability to prioritize, organize, and coordinate your own work as well as that of others
o Demonstrated critical thinking and problem-solving skills
o Ability to effectively employ human relations skills including conflict resolution
o Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
