Job summary: Martin Cohan Associates is seeking a Family Law Clerk. In this position you will be responsible for working with and assisting Ms. Alexandra Cohan to ensure success for the team and clients. The right candidate is resourceful, intelligent, a good communicator, a team player, and has excellent attention to detail and client service skills. In this role, you will be responsible for managing and prioritizing assignments, tracking important deadlines and follow-ups, and ensuring that matter progress efficiently and in a timely manner.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Drafting Legal Documents: Prepare and revise court documents including but not limited to pleadings, affidavits, separation agreements, motion materials, minutes of settlement, and financial statements, as required.
Correspondence Management: Draft and send correspondence to the Court, opposing counsel, clients, and external parties, including support payment summaries and extraordinary expenses.
Document Review and Summarization: Review and summarize legal productions from clients, opposing counsel, and other parties.
Case Preparation and Management: Prepare financial disclosure briefs, assemble materials for hearings and trials, and manage uncontested divorce files from start to finish.
Client and Court Liaison: Communicate with clients, opposing counsel, and court personnel, addressing issues and ensuring smooth case progress.
Administrative Support: Schedule appointments, manage the supervising lawyer’s calendar, including diarizing all deadlines for court, mediation, alternative dispute resolution, and handle document filing, faxing, and scanning.
What you’ll bring:
- Law Clerk Diploma
- At least 3 years of Family Law litigation experience
- Solid understanding of current legal terminology and working knowledge of Family Law Rules and court procedure
- Knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat, as well as Soluno
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to adapt when communicating with clients and team members
- Excellent organizational, multitasking, attention to detail, flexibility, and time management skills
- Strong work ethic with the ability to work strongly, independently and as a member of a team
Additional requirements:
Location: Candidate must be based in Hamilton or the surrounding area and be able to commute to the office as required.
Working hours: Standard working hours, Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 .m., with the occasional flexibility for extended hours based on client needs.
