The Position
We are seeking an Associate Lawyer, Criminal Defence to join our growing practice.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience practising criminal defence and must be comfortable independently managing files and appearing in court. This is a hands on advocacy role for a lawyer who is confident dealing directly with clients, Crown counsel, the courts, and other participants in the criminal justice system.
The lawyer will have carriage of criminal matters and will be expected to assess files, develop defence strategies, conduct negotiations, and represent clients at hearings and trials.
Responsibilities
- Independently managing criminal defence files from intake through resolution or trial
- Appearing regularly before the Ontario Court of Justice and Superior Court of Justice
- Conducting bail hearings, Crown pretrials, judicial pretrials, guilty pleas, motions, sentencing hearings, and trials
- Reviewing and analyzing disclosure and identifying evidentiary, Charter, and procedural issues
- Developing defence strategies and providing clients with clear and practical legal advice
- Negotiating with Crown counsel and advocating for appropriate resolutions where applicable
- Preparing and arguing motions and other applications
- Preparing clients and witnesses for court proceedings
- Conducting examinations and cross-examinations
- Managing court appearances, deadlines, disclosure, and other requirements associated with assigned files
Requirements
- Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
- Demonstrated experience practising criminal defence
- A minimum of two years of criminal defence experience is preferred
- Criminal courtroom and trial experience is strongly preferred
- Ability to independently manage criminal files and make sound strategic decisions
- Strong knowledge of criminal law, criminal procedure, the law of evidence, and Charter issues
- Strong written and oral advocacy skills
- Excellent judgment, organizational, and time management skills
- Ability to manage a busy caseload and competing deadlines
- Strong client communication and interpersonal skills
- Professionalism, reliability, and the ability to take ownership of assigned matters
- Access to a reliable vehicle and the ability and willingness to travel regularly to courthouses and correctional institutions throughout Ontario
The Opportunity
This position is intended for a criminal defence lawyer who is ready to take carriage of files and play an active role in a busy criminal practice. The successful candidate will handle substantive matters, appear regularly in court, work directly with clients, and contribute to the strategy and conduct of the firm's criminal cases.

Work Location
The position is based in Toronto and requires regular in-person court appearances and travel to courthouses and correctional institutions throughout Ontario.
Compensation and Application
Compensation will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s experience, qualifications, and demonstrated ability to independently manage criminal defence matters.
