PHS Community Services Society is hiring for an Assistant Food Services Manager - in Vancouver.
Reporting to the Food Services Manager (POM), the Assistant Food Services Manager supports the day-to-day operations of PHS Food Services. This role contributes to the efficient delivery of approximately 2000 meals per day across multiple kitchen sites, ensuring consistent, high quality meal production and distribution across programs.
The Assistant Food Services Manager provides leadership, guidance, and direction to Food Services staff, including training, and, where required, discipline of CUPE 5536 staff in accordance with the collective agreement and organizational policies.
As an excluded staff member, this role requires sound judgment and discretion in managing confidential and sensitive information related to employee records, staff performance, workplace incidents, and investigations. The Assistant Food Services Manager also plays an active role in fostering positive labour relations.
This position requires regular on-site work and flexibility, including occasional after-hours response to emergent operational needs.

Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for communicating job expectations, and providing onboarding, training, and mentorship. Provides clear work direction and assignment of duties.
- Engages in recruitment and the ongoing development of Food Services staff
- Applies performance management practices, including coaching, conflict resolution, and escalation of concerns when necessary
- Responsible for implementing progressive discipline, up to and including termination, while safeguarding procedural fairness
- In consultation with Food Services Manager, leads confidential investigations into staff conduct and performance concerns. Ensures appropriate documentation, maintains strict confidentiality, and facilitates fair and timely resolution in alignment with employment legislation, the collective agreement, and organizational policies.
- Supports scheduling, attendance management, and staffing coverage, including last minute adjustments. Performs timesheet reviews for payroll accuracy
- Fosters a collaborative, respectful, and team-oriented workplace culture
- Contributes to positive labour relations and ensures compliance with collective agreements and organizational policies
- Supports the coordination of food production and delivery across all kitchen sites to ensure timely and consistent meal service
- Monitors workflow efficiency and identifies opportunities for operational improvements
- Assists with centralized procurement, inventory management, and cost control strategies
- Supports menu planning and development in collaboration with the Food Services Manager and Registered Dietitian, ensuring nutritional standards and program requirements are met
- Ensures compliance with Food Safe standards, including certification tracking and inspection readiness
- Liaises with vendors, suppliers, and community partners, including food donation programs
- Assists in monitoring budgets, budget development, and identifying cost effective purchasing options
- Organizes third party repairs, maintenance, and equipment servicing related to kitchen operations. Supports operational readiness across kitchen sites, identifying maintenance or infrastructure needs
- Collaborates with Housing and Programs teams to address food quality and service feedback
- Supports implementation of new programs and service expansion initiatives
- Supports occupational health and safety practices and reporting in accordance with WorkSafeBC requirements
- Reports critical incidents to manager and Safety team
- Performs other related administrative and operational duties as required
Qualifications/Experience
- Journeyman Cook, Red Seal designation
- 3-5 years of management experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
- Experience in high volume food service operations considered an asset
- Strong understanding of budget management and cost control
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, with a strong team-oriented approach
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative, follow direction, problem solve, manage conflict, and support operational improvements
- High attention to detail with excellent organizational ability
- Valid Food Safe Level 2 certification required (or completion within probationary period)
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certification, or willingness to obtain
- WCB Level 1 First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain
This is an excluded, full-time position.
Hours: 40hrs/wk
